Networking Question...
My friend calls me up yesterday and asks me to come over at look at his network. I guess if you work in the adult online biz you become a Microsoft Network Professional over night. hehe
Anyway, he has DSL through BellSouth which is a horrible service. The DLS modem they have given him has an output of a USB connection. So if you plug that into the computer it has connectivity. The problem is...how in hell do you network this? I told him to go to Best Buy and look for a Hub/Router that will share the connectivity through a USB port into Cat 5 cable, but he said Best Buy didn't have one. Any suggestions? |

plug a router/switch into the ethernet card on the first box connected to the modem, and use the networking wizrd to use it as a gateway.

LAN Connection RJ-45 Ethernet. The only output from the modem is a USB connection. |

I think he needs to ask Bell South for a new modem. Having the line go to his computer, then to the router/hub to give connectivity is not the proper way of doing this and that's what I don't want have to do. Too much of a pain in the ass.

This is very easy to do. Have him buy a cheap little hub or switch (if he does not already have one), and make sure the computer that is connected to the DSL has a network card in it. Next set his computer that is hooked up to the DSL modem to it to allow "Internet Connection Sharing". This will set his computers IP to 192.168.0.1. Then just tell all the computers that are connected to his network to use 192.168.0.1 as the gateway.....done!
Hit me up on ICQ later if you need a hand. 179419520 |

if it uses the usb port I guess you can just put in one network card and buy a special cable to connect directly with another computer. then just run modem sharing, there are functions for that in Windows 2000 and XS I think, if you're using that OS that is. if ya need help with setting that up later hit me up on ICQ: 3652156 I had a rough time getting that to work at first so I know how frustrating it can be ;) ![]()
