Ovid's Metamorphoses. I was given a a children's book of Greek myths when I was about 7 years old, written by Robert Graves of I, Claudius fame, and it hooked me on the mythology genre. I read Ovid's book when I was around 18, and it had grown-up versions of most (if not all) of the myths I'd read as a child.

Thanks OP and thanks marcop! Some mythology sounds like a great diversion right now, and lord knows I could use one. So I'm taking a chance and I've ordered the book

Plenty of good short stories on Mythology on youtube. The part about the Minotaur you don't hear in elementary. A woman fucks a buffalo.

I grew up meeting with others of all ages every week to study a book of mythology called the King James Bible.

Ovid's grandiose horror story (The Metamorphosis) is not a beginner's book indeed. For greek mythos, start with the source: The Homeric Hymns and Hesiod's Theogony.

Cthulhu is really awesome, I've read most Lovecraft books this year and it was captivating.
That being said my favorite Lovecraft book is "the case of charles dexter ward" and its quite light in Mythology.

If you're interested in some fun reading that ties in various mythos, then I would recommend Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.

                        A few things:
                        1) There was a short lived TV series, but it really doesn't do the books justice.
                        2) The books (and short stories) are chronological, so you will want to start at the beginning.
                        3) The first book was originally conceived in a writing class, so his writing was still kind of raw, but it improved as he found his style.
                        4) If you read the first, liked it, and want to read the rest then pick of Side Jobs, a collection of the short stories that prefaces each of those stories with where they fit into the chronology.

Vernant has a more anthropological scope. Graves is full-on mythographer.
