I have never soldered wire before - question

Bought a soldering iron.
Small tube of solder came with it.
Can I tin the tip with it?
Is this for tinning the tip?

Yea, Watching quite a few of them. I will just try tinning the tip with the solder that came with the kit and see how it works out.

You have to tin the tip to prevent it from oxidizing. To do this you need rosin core solder and there are 2 ways you can go about it.

1. Just wrap a layer of solder around the iron when it's cold and let it heat up.
2. Let the iron get hot and dab it with the solder.

The solder that usually comes with an iron is usually really poor quality. Personally, I like to make sure that I always use the highest quality solder for electrical work. So nothing less than steel based 60-40 mix with 1.5% rosin.

Hope that helps.

Take a wet sponge and run the hot tip over it. Then keep applying solder. It will find equilibrium and leave a nice silver tip. It’s easy

It just takes some practice. Tinning the tip is just basically tapping the tip with solder so that there's a little bit on it to start.

Sometimes people will hate soldering because they're doing things like soldering on headers or something small while using an iron that isn't powerful enough, or using too much solder. Or some are like my friend and try to mod an amp with a plumbing iron and then I have to fix it.

You'll get it, it's not hard.

Practice a bit. And get one of those baby nasal suckers, aka, solder suckers. So you can heat up a fuck up and then suck it out. But the main thing is.... Learning how to heat the wire you will be soldering to the point of wanting to suck your solder onto it, but not so much that you destroy something the wire is attached to. Like a chip. Different sizes of wire require more heating before bringing the solder into the equation.

go to youtube and I'm sure there are soldering tips on there. I learned to do it back in the '80s but I haven't done it since the '90s.

No worries. I could use youtube and google to look up info (and I have).

The reason I ask here is so that the conversation does go off topic. I like how things go off on tangents here.

- clean everything (acetone = but dangerous with fire or heat !)
- aerate
- the tip needs to be hot enough
- melt a bit of tin on your iron tip (heat conduction)
- then do whatever you have to do but be fast
- don't melt the same tin too often
