OK i'm on the verge of getting my own hosting, and I'm ALMOST decided. But is it really more worth it to have paid hosting even when using TGP traffic? Lots of TGP is full of bull-shit surfers who wont spend a penny, (and of course there are those who do), but do the benefits really outweigth the costs of having paid hosting? Any recommendations for a webmaster like me looking to get a single domain on a single host (for now at least) that will be used for TGP Traffic and Link List?

There is a significant difference for me when using a free host for my tgp's as opposed to using my paid hosting. Paid hosting is definately the way to go but as Hazen pointed out, find the most productive TGP's that work for you before you use your paid host for your galleries.* The captain has turned on the no idiots sign. Dizzy. what do you mean ? smutserver will host your domain and won't put up his banners ? or what ?
By the way,
anyone can suggest a good host where you don't need to buy any "plans" - I mean that has just a flat rate like 2$ a gig and wont care if 1 month you get 300gig and another month 3 megs ?

I use freehosting to do my galleries
and push the traffic to my main sites that are on paid hosting this filters off the bad traffic and yeah you do loose some to the freehost banners but hey it didnt cost you anything

Paid hosting has major benefits when it comes to TGPs looking for clean galleries as well as linklists... you also don't have that top banner to take most of your traffic. Normally, the revenue made from that top banner spot of YOURS (not the free hosts) is more than enough to cover the costs of the paid hosting, assuming you know what you're doing.
I would seriously consider looking into paid hosting for at least some of your sites -- I still use free hosts, but my biggest moneymakers, even though I am paying bandwidth bills, are on paid hosting, and good domain names.

Don't EVER trust freehosts that don't have ads.
I had a bunch of adult sites on an adult freehost. They didn't display any ads, or popups.
Then one day, as my traffic is starting to sort itself out and I'm getting a few 1000 hits a day. they pull the plug on ALL my sites.
So instead of the traffic going to my sites, it is immediately directed to their adult site with all their own banners.Comment

If you are serious about tgp posting, you should consider getting on a paid host. Sure it costs money, but it takes money to make money.
If you are on a free host, all your work can be lost when the host decides to redirect it. That sucks. I am sure alot of people on this board had that happen to them at one point or another.
In the long run you are better off on a paid host. Every now and then some big tgps decide to stop accepting submissions from their submission form and invite webmasters to become a "preferred submitter" and let you submit to their tgp. If you are on a free host, they won't even contact you. Some of the big tgps that have gone that route lately have been elephantlist, bloatedgoat and slutwifestory.

starmedia is one of biggest portals in latinamerica, it's something like AOL... they appear on tv several times a day, and spend lots of money in marketing... i'm they they won't "pull the plug" for some dollars......

I do the same thing Tanker, but I've had lots of full-time posters tell me there's alot more money to be made if you use a real host for your galleries.
My galleries are pretty profitable for me, so I know they're pretty good. When I grow some balls I'll pay to host them and keep detailed stats on pay vs free.Comment

I'm wondering why more people don't use a hybrid of the two. The main reason is that you can have the best of both worlds. You can have the paid hosting that uses a domain name that you control, and you keep the traffic if your free host dies off. Have your front page reside on the paid host, and every other page come off the free host. Granted this would not work well for TGP listings, but for most LL and top lists it should work just fine. For the TGP stuff you could have a small gallery on the paid host, say 4 to 8 pics, and then additional links to larger galleries on the free hosts. That way you minimize your hosting charges, and can still offer a larger group of pic's and get your surfer to spend more time on your site. Just a thought, I'm sure that there are many more ways to utilize a hybrid of the two. Thanks

Tell me about it! Sexdomain.com did the same thing with me! I was having a great time with them then all of a sudden ALL my pages that I had with them went "poof". I got a feeling they just went away for good.. That sucks...

Dark Jedi-
The hosting company I work for does not have any "minimum commitment" for bandwidth. We also dont have "overage" fees. There is always a flat per gig rate (the rate depends on how much traffic you do). You can email me [email protected] if you would like.Comment
