Wearing masks might help build the herd immunity for COVID19

    https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2026913

As SARS-CoV-2 continues its global spread, it’s possible that one of the pillars of Covid-19 pandemic control — universal facial masking — might help reduce the severity of disease and ensure that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic. If this hypothesis is borne out, universal masking could become a form of “variolation” that would generate immunity and thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere, as we await a vaccine.

    ........................................

In an outbreak on a closed Argentinian cruise ship, for example, where passengers were provided with surgical masks and staff with N95 masks, the rate of asymptomatic infection was 81% (as compared with 20% in earlier cruise ship outbreaks without universal masking). In two recent outbreaks in U.S. food-processing plants, where all workers were issued masks each day and were required to wear them, the proportion of asymptomatic infections among the more than 500 people who became infected was 95%, with only 5% in each outbreak experiencing mild-to-moderate symptoms.3 Case-fatality rates in countries with mandatory or enforced population-wide masking have remained low, even with resurgences of cases after lockdowns were lifted.

. . . I was about to state in the other shard-of-cloth-controversy thread that TONS of women are benefiting from using it. Girls with actual beautiful faces actually look kinda quirky wearing them.

In other words, the theory goes: masks allow for the herd to catch such a small viral load that the immune system can fairly easily battle the virus with minimal repurcussions. Think of it like an air filter reducing the amount of pollen in your house, easing allergy symptoms.

There is no herd immunity with COVID-19 and there won't be. Just like there isn't any herd immunity with the flu. Jeez!

shhhh.. don't tell them or the false hopes will be shattered.

But! a vaccine will save America, just like its done with the flu in the past 40 years since we've had annual vaccines... No one gets the flu any more and certainly no one dies from it and everyone just lines up to have their vaccine shot.

An large study in Iceland has found that herd immunity is a thing for covid. The difference with flu is that it keeps mutating so, whereas covid is fairly stable.

How many strains of COVID-19 are out there? Do you not know? Please post a link to this large study in Iceland. Also please post where you got any information that the virus COVID-19 is stable.
                            I'd like to know.

"Wearing masks might help build the herd immunity for COVID19"

I never presented it as fact. I stated that it MIGHT help and that is what the article I linked to implies.

There is absolutely no documented evidence of herd immunity. You stated it might help. But how can it help? Virus mutations do not lend themselves to herd immunity. COVID is a cold virus and we have never had herd immunity to the common cold. COVID-19 is a mutation of the common cold. The article implies herd immunity. Half of this country is as stupid as a sack of rocks and will keep this virus going because they think all these bullshit maybes will work. That's what's got my panties in a wad. My wife is a doctor, we are extremely aware of what the fuck is what. We will be wearing masks this time next year and if they do get a vaccine, we will be lucky if it works half as well as a flu vaccine. So mights and maybes and implied this and that serve no purpose whatsoever.

The title was on purpose as click bait for the anti-maskers.

They claim that we should go for herd immunity so they should not wear a mask.

The article is very pro-mask but does not actually mention herd immunity. The article states that masks can make it so you do not get as severe of a case if you do catch it because you will be carrying less of a viral load.

If it puts a mask on those fuckers then it would have helped, won't it?

Of course I do I'm an at home web worker, I haven't had the flu in decades.. because I'm self employed and all business contacts are via the web.... This life style limits your exposure to circulating viruses. So I get a flu shot, no so much to protect me from the flu but so my immune system is aware what's happening in the world outside of the bubble I live in.
