A classic car online from California. A friend checked it out but didn’t know enough about the car and I was not experienced enough to get the right person to help.
It arrived and needed almost twenty grand to restore it before part replacement.
After dropping nearly forty thousand dollars on it, I never saw it or drove it. Coma happened and it was sold for a huge loss by an accountant with no knowledge of classic cars. He sold my collection for a huge loss.

My ex-brother-in-law got divorced from my sister after 12 years of marriage. He makes $175k a year working for the school system. No kids and he got stuck paying 10 years of alimony AND when he retires he has to give her 30% of his pension. They got married in their 40s so he's going to pay alimony for 10 years, work another 5-10 years, and when he retires he's probably going to end up giving her $40-50k a year... till she dies!
All because they were married for 12 years. They didn't even have kids. Like how insane is that?Comment

Agree unless, you buy it for a fraction of the price (1/10th) on the secondary resale market, and hold title in a LLC. This way, you personally are not liable for the annual fees, and can walk away from it, when it makes sense.
I'm a professional husband, on my third wife now. Dad had seven before he died unexpectedly, I honestly thought he would pull off an eighth.
Some advice. Save around 24% buying a brand new, but last year model. In 2016 I purchased a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee from the dealership, and managed the negotiating over the telephone. Using Jeep.com online inventory, I called all the dealerships within 2 hours of me, which had an excessive amount of 2015 on the lots. I didn't ask for their best price, but instead told them, I am willing to pay X. Most tried to convince me that its not going to happen, and countered with half the savings I was looking for. Simply I left them my phone #, if they change their mind. Two dealerships agreed on my price, but could not sell the vehicle immediately as a mandatory software update was required prior to being released. Within a couple hours, one dealership called back, saying the tech is upgrading the software now, and they are ready for me. I was in / out of the dealership in under 90 minutes.
I leased one for nearly two weeks in Thailand. Literally saved money having her. She was a tour guide, masseuse, helped negotiate substantially better prices on everything we did.
For those that know me from the trade shows, I always walked around with a very basic Samsung or Nokia that costs around 12-13 USD/EUR. My entire team always had the latest smart phones, and I always re-gifted any that I received. Last year I surrendered to having one, and I'm constantly distracted by it. As soon as reasonably possible, I am going to hand it off to an Assistant, so I can focus on everything but the phone.
Placing properties and other assets into Trusts, prenuptial agreements, and in general remaining friendly with the ex-spouse/wife helps alot. For wife #1, no sharing of assets, no alimony, only child support. For wife #2, no sharing of assets, no alimony and since we had no children together, no child support. We are still friends, and whenever I feel as if I have extra money, I send it to her to use as she needs. I am truly grateful to remaining good friends with her. The second dumbest thing I ever did ...
I was sixteen and flush with cash from having income coming in from a job. Pressured my parents into signing a purchase and loan agreement on a used BMW 320i. You know those kids that go hysterical on their mom and dad, when they don't get what they want, I did that with mine. It was the only time.
Purchased it from a neighbor who owned a used car dealership, and whose kid I tutored.
Who would think that a neighbor would take advantage of me. I took it in the @ss three ways.
- I come to learn the car originally had a salvage title, but was run through several state DMVs until the "salvage" part fell off and only a clean title remained.
- it went into the repair shop twice for a water pump and at four times to have a temperature sensor valve replaced each time. Part was maybe 10 USD, labor was about 90 USD each time. Only later do I come to learn that it takes about 10 minutes to replace the part, and one can simply not install the temperature sensor valve in warmer climate States, and the engine will be just fine.

At least the lessons where learned. That was the first and last time I allowed myself to be taken advantage off. Since then, I typically negotiate 20-25% off from new cars, and interest rates are extremely low. My parents (mother and step father) invested money heavily in Europe. My step father would buy a car at one of those car auctions dirt cheap, fix it up, and sell at for cash for a huge profit. Every other month he flew over to Europe and invested the money. This was all under the table, no taxes, etc....
