Who would be interested in doing a lyrics site with me?

I'll do all of the programming, content acquisition, strategy, data modeling, site structure, installation, maintenance, db tuning, search engine work, linkage, etc.

    What I need are:

Someone who will provide a dedicated server and bandwidth.

    and/or

Someone who will do excellent graphic design.

I won't get into all of the technical details, but the main thrust is that it will be clean, spartan, useful site with more total data than any other. It will also have kickass pagerank.

Each lyric page will have links off cd purchases. Other links are possible, as long as they're contextual. Long term goal will be to make this the most usable, popular lyrics site.

links will be created dynamically using a random, equally divided distrubution of affiliate links for each person who is part of the project.

(i can prove that i am capable of all of the above.)

    is someone interested?

I'm quite aware of what's out there, thanks.

But I can spider / parse faster than any of these folks, offer it up cleaner, and drive googlebot apeshit.

Dude, I have a project that's on the cutting edge of the semantic web. Right in line with Tim Lee's main focus right now.

As far as lyrics traffic being useless, it may be useless for porn. Lyrics sites do make good money, however.

By "content acquisition," do you mean stealing copyrighted lyrics? If so, I'd add "legal defense" to the list of major duties such a site would require. Or d you mean just acquiring links to other sites?

The bad thing is: by the time people need the lyrics of a song
they are usually already in the possesion of the song.

Second issue is: mostly teens search lyircs on the Net..

Start an outwar community.. youll make a killing.

They are in possession of <i>a</i> song, but not the album. Teenagers do spend money online (not on porn). Again, these sites do make money, particularly the ones with tons of data.

I can also create a list of cddb songs for which no lyrics exist on the web, giving users the ability to add those, and add their own cd referral links.

I'm not looking to lay out the entire business plan here. If someone is seriously interested they can chat with me on icq (13384735).

Ok, I just did a bit of homework and read up on the topic, and all the legal precedants seem to say it's infringement. Doesn't matter if you have users enter the infringing material if you solicit it. There are a ton of sites with lyrics, there's no disputing that, but it also seems like as a lyric site gets big, if it actually hosts the lyrics, it gets shut down by lawyers. And smaller ones seem to frequently change domains to free-hosted offshore accounts to slow the legal persuit. Is there some legal case, or article you could point to, that suggests otherwise? I mean as a counter example, see he Lyrics section on http://toasterking.tripod.com/music.html, which is a bit out of date, but that illustrates a point: its list of links to big lyric sites are mostly shut down, or are paying for their content. Ohhla and some New Zealand site are still up and still infringing, although ohhla at least has received a cease and desist from BMI, and since they haven't ceased, they're open to some monster damages if they lose a suit.

correct, lawyers go after such sites when they get big

happened to www.olga.net a few years ago but they're in game again, dunno how

                                      From http://chords.8m.com/

"About OLGA: The OnLine Guitar Archive was first shut down from its original site at nevada.edu by vague threats of a lawsuit from a music publishing company. Moved to its own site, it was shut down again in August 1998 through legal actions by the Richard Fox Agency. Their reasoning is that the archive holds copyrighted material, which music publishing companies profit from selling. It is clear that publishing on the web a note-for-note copy of a song transcription from a guitar magazine violates copyright law. However, a site which holds incomplete renditions of various peoples' impression's of how a song might be played, which are often not available to be purchased in sheet music form, and basically amounts to a collection of personal messages, has not been dealt with in the legal sense. And I don't see how there can be a problem with that, as long as limits are observed. Thus we come to the rules."

I'm sure they'd lose a court battle again, but nobody has bothered to do it. The legal costs probably outstrip what they perceive as lost revenue from the site's infringement. While they could win a multi-million-dollar judgement, the site owner would just declare bankrupty or flee the country anyway, so they'd recoup next to nothing in terms of legal costs.

most lyrics sites just steal lyrics from other sites, I know because i constantly see the same errors same wrong lyrics posted on multiple sites.

Is this legal though? I would think it would be since they can't copyright it, it is not there lyrics.
                                              I doubt it.

Since you're not really supposed to technically, *copy* and paste anything from one site to yours.

I'm just commenting on how many do it.

Take a look around. I think I visit lyric sites daily. Many people like me do, and I promise you, we dont click any banners and all the pop ups they pop are killed quickly, its shit traffic for real money. I'll stick to porn.

But I know from surfing lyric sites daily that people just rip all the lyrics from one site and paste them on another, and the better YOUR site is, OTHERS will just rip all your lyrics.

                                              Bad game.

google doesn't care about meta tags... I'd focus on google, since more than 85% of the traffic will come from it...

I have just finished the programing for such a site and I just want to know how much can you make with 5k visitors a day with such a site.

                                                        Any experience?

Why not hire or outsource instead of taking on a partner. if you can get the traffic, develop the database and content all yourself, I don't see why you should split the revenues with someone for just a small portion of the business? It seems you got the whole business model laid out and just need help on one aspect, I would just consider outsourcing that aspect.
