Tv's are cheap these days. Do you choose quality over price ??

Would you settle for say 55" and standard brand but 4K etc.

Or do you still pay for quality and get a 55" at 4x the price but top of the range Qled etc ?

For all i watch (which isn't much) i'm finding it harder to justify paying £2000 for a tv when i can get one for £450.

I always figured our next living room tv would be from the top range but from what i've seen the others day a pretty decent just at 1/4 the price or less.

Liken say not a major film buff or watch much Netflix series so......as long as the sports etc look good then.

Alternatively, go round to a few of your nearest neighbours houses, knock on their door, and complain about the TV stations all being down on Freeview and Sky.

When they tell you that you are wrong, and theirs is fine, act like you don't believe them. You'll get invited in, so they can prove you wrong...

Make a mental note of who has the best TV, and how secure the house is (look for alarms etc) then when lockdowns over and they go back to work, just help yourself to a new telly that way?

I only watch TV on weekends at Costco. They have free food then as well. So it's a twofer.
But yeah, cheap is better in TV's.

I never buy the latest and greatest, I also don't like to buy off brands. I like to stick with 1-2 year old technology in a product from a manufacturer like Samsung, Sharp, Sony, LG, etc.

My 1080p 70" Sharp still hasn't died after 6 years, when it does I'll buy whatever 70-75 looks best at the store and is also on sale or a reasonable price ($1500-2k).

I like Samsung screens on my TVs, phone and computers. They are the brightest and clearest and best screens on the market. But having said that you can buy Samsungs fairly cheap these days.

Buy the biggest, cheapest TV you can find and it will still be 100x better than TVs made a few years ago.

Last year I bought a 1080P LED Projector and it's great. It's a 90" screen and I have a Pioneer surround and Polk Audio surround speakers and a 12" powered sub.

Before that, I had a 55" Samsung 3D tv I bought in 2014 but after just 4 years it had dark spots. TVs today are made like SHIT. I had a 26" RCA TV gave to me from my mom that worked from like 1975 to 1993.

Just got a new Sony 55" a few weeks ago, 2018 model. At first all seem to be the same (LEDs), but there are some pretty noticeable differences - refresh rate, backlit, OS etc. A pretty good site to compare them: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/table/23374
Please note that the model name varies from continent to continent. Its a Canadian site, so sometimes its hard to find the things they sell here in EU.

Currently the cheapest LED you can get what will be the closest to an OLED (dark blacks, colors wise) is the Sony X900F (in EU its XF9005): FALD (Full Array Local Dimming), 120hz, HDR10, USB3 (in case you want to record something).. comes in 49-85"

But it comes down to what will you be watching in the end. If its just regular TV broadcast then anything will do it. If its Netflix (with solid Internet connection) or BluRay then I guess you will need HDR(10) too. And if you watch your TV during the night with lights shut in the dark, then FALD is also a nice feature to have.

Yep. Think my decision is made to be honest. And reading all the replies looks like we have all possibly changed how we watch/want to watch tv. Basically for small money now you can have a big ass tv with a great picture.

To be deadly serious, I dont think theres really much of a difference these days , as long as you get a 'known name' and not some off brand product you've never heard of...

People go on about 'How Black the Blacks are' and stuff like that, but without laboratory conditions, and specialised equipment to measure the 'depth of the black' its all much of a muchness.

Black is Black is Black, unless it ISN'T Black... And if it isn't black, you can see right away and send it back - Simples.

Not really, in a dark room you can see the difference. On LED/LCD TVs you have various backlight setups, with the basic ones the backlight is always on so the black won't be a black at all, it will be a glowing grey or something like that.. where on panels where parts of the screens backlight can simply go off the black can be pretty much black almost like on an OLED panel. At daylight it doesn't really matters as much, but in a dark room or at night it does. And believe me I'm definitely not one of those TV/screen junkies

I respect what you are saying, but still stand by my original comment. Put simply, if I buy a TV and it doesn't look correct in ALL lighting conditions, it will go straight back and I'll get another. Put simply, that TV would not be a 'Good TV'

Likewise, if it all looked 'Fine' or 'As I would expect it to look' I certainly wouldn't be getting a 'SpiderX Pro' out, and looking for something to complain about like some of these youtube reviewers do...

But in essence, if it doesn't look 'OK' then it goes straight back.

Yeah I get what you are saying - "if its good enough for you, keep it".. which is true.
I was more referring to your statement "I dont think theres really much of a difference these days", because there is.. and you dont need to pay 5 times more for it, but at least 1.5-2* yes. So in case you are getting a 80" something then the price difference will be huge.. but if you are getting something relatively smaller (55-60"), then dont.

Oh and if you are planning to watch real 4k content then get at least 60". We couldn't get that size because of the rooms limitation and where the TV is located, but 55" is small for that.

I got a smart TV (actually 5 of them) throughout the house since I have a couple of kids. We watch everything from Disney to Netflix but they are hooked on YouTube etc. so much that we rarely watch our satellite anymore. In Canada you can get a large TV at a pretty good price around 400 to 600 even higher but there isn't any need as you're only paying for bells and whistles you never use.

You probably don't want a screen so big you have to look side to side or so small you see a lot of wall in your field of vision.
