Tech Buffering time on a streaming video

Any geek here able to point me to a solution?

My streaming site streams cca 90 minute long HD movies encoded into XH 264. The bit rate is about 2,000.

The problem appears to be, that if I try to jump to, lets say into the middle of a movie or jump back, I get the buffering "spinning wheel of patience" for up to 2 minutes before the video resumes.

The site is a paid VOD and NOT a tube, yet when I look and most free tubes ( claiming to be HD) like Xvideo or xHamster their buffering is just a few seconds long , so it is NOT my Internet speed.

    Any ideas why?

It's not due to your bitrate, it's due to the video information being put on the end of the file.

Videos are not encoded for web streaming; A/V times are not put at the front of the media file, which they should if you want to play a certain part of the file.

I have 5GB videos which start instantenously, so that explains it.

    Just properly encode them

If you are running a server with apache you need an HTTP pseudo streaming mod installed . Servers running nginx 90% of the time already have the mod pre installed.

Or if you want really fast streaming/ index search and all video perks like live streaming just use a wowza web server.

tbh, this also can happen to vids on sites like PH or Xvids, jumping between vids can create a lag in buffering in general...

or stop being a perve and trying to get to the hardcore bit first

joking aside, maybe one of the guys above can help you, hopefully they will! But as said, jumping up and about on a film can create lag on buffering no matter which site, this is what i´ve noticed

            Thanks for your suggestions.

I do NOT do the encoding, but am assured that the encoding with XH 264 is done correctly. So that seem to be not the issue.

Thanks Niels. How would you be able to check ? Access to the server would be a problem.

Thanks for your advice BUT this is a way over my head. One thing I know. My host is very competent and runs very updated, but will check with him about the "pseudo streaming mod" installation.

I just need a link to the video page, I should be able to figure it out or at least make sure its not the basic stuff like encoding or wrong server/player setup.

Im out for a few hours but can help you later today.
