Why Japan is so successful at returning lost property

    https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2...-lost-property

With an inner-city population fast approaching 14 million people, millions of items go missing here each year. But a staggering number of them find their way home. In 2018, over 545,000 ID cards were returned to their owners by Tokyo Metropolitan Police – 73% of the total number of lost IDs. Likewise, 130,000 mobile phones (83%) and 240,000 wallets (65%) found their way back. Often these items were returned the same day

In a study comparing dropped phones and wallets in New York and Tokyo, 88% of phones “lost” by the researchers were handed into the police by Tokyo residents, compared to 6% of the ones “lost” in New York. Likewise, 80% of Tokyo wallets were handed in compared to 10% in New York. The abundance of police stations must make it easier, but is there something else going on.

Well, same thing as Japan being only place where they dont need security guard in malls, as people dont steal stuff there.

Japan is 98 % Japanese, the rest of foreign nationals are mostly spouses and family relations. Japan has a culture of honesty. Less then 1% are "true foreigners". Japan is not " culturaly enriched",so it makes perfect sense.

Amazing country. A buddy of mine was in the Navy, got drunk there and forgot his wallet at the bar. Got to his post and realized he was missing it. Came back 4 hours later and his wallet was on the side of the table while some Japanese people were drinking there. Nothing was missing.
I tried to tip bellboy in Osaka and he refused. Said it is a no-no in Japan because I'm insulting his company by saying they don't pay him enough.

I wonder if the same will happen here if all the foreigners went back to Europe.

The stats are showing that could be possible:

I am guessing, Japan may have a strong sense of community.

As opposed to Singapore, Where people don't steal either. But that is because of torture. I don't think Japanese prisons are that rough, I don't know.

I think maybe also it's a lack of diversity within their own people, and perhaps this has the effect of making them less individualistic and less selfish, and a greater sense of duty.

Its a cultural thing. Even yakuza does not "steal. It brings shame on your entire family.
