The rape charges have not been dropped. Sweden has a time limit on investigations and Assange evaded questioning until the investigations ran out of time.

Unfortunately for him he managed to evade the questioning by breaking further laws. i.e. breaking bail conditions. Hence he is now in prison.

The Swedes are considering re opening the investigation.
