Both my grandfathers were fighting Nazis. One has returned home in 1945 and the other one has died on the battlefield in 1941. Thanks to them.

I could mention that the cold war is still going strong. But because of mutual interest (Gas from Russia and cheap Chinese shit) so at least we fight it out in Syria and soon maybe Venezuela, far away from the EU.
