Hillcrest High School student in racist Snapchat photo recommended for expulsion

A student at Hillcrest High School accused of posting a racist photo on social media this week is being recommended for expulsion, according to the Greenville County school district.

A Snapchat photo, now found on Facebook, shows a picture of a girl holding up a poster in one hand that uses a racial slur and has a reference to hangings. In the other hand, she's holding a long-barrel gun.

After the post was shared across social media, the school district confirmed the girl in the photo is a Hillcrest High School student, said Beth Brotherton, Greenville County Schools spokeswoman.

School resource officers were made aware of the inappropriate photo on Tuesday. Extra personnel were placed at the school while the post was being investigated, said Justin Campbell, a spokesman for the city of Simpsonville.

The girl was suspended after she was identified and is being recommended for expulsion as of Wednesday, Brotherton said.

Brotherton said there was no specific threat to Hillcrest High School. The photo was taken at home and shared at home, but since she was a student and since the post was being circulated among students at Hillcrest, the post created a disturbance.

"Stuff like this isn’t necessarily a direct threat to the school, but it essentially incites panic and causes what it causes it," Brotherton said.

The Rev. J.M. Flemming, president of the Greenville Branch of the NAACP, released a statement Wednesday denouncing the post.

"We are saddened to hear of a racial attack on blacks by a white student in Greenville County Schools," Flemming said in the statement. "This shows the issue of racism is very real since this youth was not born during times of civil rights era then racial hatred is embedded."

Campbell, who also serves as a spokesman for the Simpsonville Police Department, said the student will not face criminal charges. A thorough investigation was based around "intent," he said, and investigators could not find where she intended to commit a criminal act.

"It's important for people to consider the criteria for criminal charges and bad behavior," he said. "This is no way condoning that photo, but they have to follow the law."
