The island it is on, Île de la Cité, is where the Parisi and later the Merovingians lived before they grew to the banks. This cathedral was begun 1000 years ago and held numerous priceless relics (I hope they got some out). Really it is the heart of Paris, literally and spiritually. An immeasurable loss.

They didn't just soak them to save them. They soaked them to hope to slow them once they started fire.
