Left or right what do you think about Amazon not setting up shop in N.Y..

I'm not a fan of Amazon but think it's bad practice to turn away a big employer like them.

Twenty-five thousand jobs promised for three million in tax breaks. The income from the commute to Long Island would have been great for the train system. But politicians and others didn’t like them coming in their territory.

I’m not sure what a store is helping other than jobs. Get dressed, go out, get there, park or just shop, shlep everything home — or sit in jammies, go on computer, click, wait two days and it’s at your door.

No snotty sales clerk, no shlepping,no traffic, no tickets, privacy and be naked if you want.

NYC still don't even have Walmart. One of the few things I still love about my city.

I think Amazon made billions in profit and isn't paying any taxes.

Why should they be getting 3 billion dollars in tax breaks? I love Amazon, but fuck them.

Why won't Amazon do something useful like revitalize Detroit? New York is doing fine.

What a horrible thing. Driving OFF business and jobs.
Now another city will benefit.

The state taxes in New York are crazy. What should happen there is that instead of having to give "special" tax breaks to Amazon...they should lower ALL the taxes and bring back a lot of businesses and JOBS for people.

Instead, New York just got screwed by their own politicians (again).

Good call on Detroit, or Flint Michigan.

What do I think? AOC tells me what to think. CNN tells me what opinions I'm supposed to have. Please turn to them to find out what I think about Amazon. And kindly let me know, so I can be assured exactly where I stand on the issue.

going out of business because of high rent.
My area went from small self-owned muffin shops, breakfast place, pizza parlor etc...
to 10 dry cleaners on one block.
Amazon would run even more of those type places out of business and the business
owners would end up working in the Amazon warehouse for $15/hour, which is starvation in NY.

NYC fucked themselves out of 25,000 Jobs. Income tax from those jobs. Sales tax from all those people buying goods and services. Property tax on the property. More revenue to the MTA. They fucked themselves out of a shitload of money that is much needed. Granted that Amazon would have gotten some incentives to set up shop. The long term benefits would have outweighed the incentives.

Amazon was smart to say fuck You to NYC after all the political bullshit.

New York City has 8.623 million people and the "Tri-state area" has 20.3 million people.
25,000 jobs ain't even a drop in the bucket.

NYC is a horrible location for something like that. A few rich higher ups would be able to afford to live near by while the thousand or 2 workers would have to commute into that mess daily.

It was beyond stupid to put it there. They should put it in one of the cities that's building up or revitalizing so their workers can actually have reasonable housing costs.

Put it somewhere like Pittsburgh, PA somewhere in MA or CT if they want to be in the NE.

I think Amazon was stupid to pull out so quick.

I think Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in over her head. She totally disrespected the massive amount of work her fellow lawmakers did to put that deal together.

Hopefully the Democratic party has now learned that letting a socialist run on the Democratic platform is nothing but trouble. Bernie Sanders, now Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Hopefully they'll pull the plug on her now, if they're able to.

She fucked up big time and made some ignorant statements about the Amazon deal. Evidently she didn't even consult with any other representative before going public with her anti business bullshit.

They're getting tax breaks because they're building new buildings, streets & bridges in that area to improve the infrastructure for their headquarters.

Also, all the people who come to work there will increase property values because demand for housing will increase exponentially. Think San Francisco and the tech boom there.

Also, many small businesses will see an exponential increase in business. Think printing services, delivery services, restaurants, retail.

When property values go up that's more taxes and that's more money for schools etc. Sales tax is over 6%. So more people buying food, gas, etc. paying that 6% tax, even more money for schools etc.

Amazon wasn't setting up a store like Walmart. This was going to be an HQ for them. Wasn't going to hurt any local biz, and would have instead given every local biz a boost by having 25000 people with good jobs eating, drinking, and buying things in that neighborhood.

Which would have created even more jobs to service that workforce.

I dont see you hanging around in their current NY office(there are plenty of soft male hands, but the are to shy for you). I’m just saying dont hate on Amazon for getting taxbreaks, every other company would (try to) do the exact same, If they were to establish them self there.

Once again. 25,000 people in New York City is NOTHING!

Get that stupid fucking number out of your head.
The previous World trade center had 50,000 people in just two buildings.

Quote:
The iconic twin towers of downtown Manhattan's World Trade Center were a triumph of human imagination and will. Completed in 1973, the towers stood at 110 stories each, accommodating 50,000 workers and 200,000 daily visitors in 10 million square feet of space.Dec 3, 2009

If you think 25,000 people is a big number in NYC then you probably live in a corn field.

New York has too many people and headquarters anyway. Should send Amazon HQ to Mexico City. Many people here work hard. Americans all on disablities and spending life in bricked College campus.

If you think 25,000 people is a big number in NYC then you probably live in a corn field.

Dude, 25,000 people making high dollar salaries that weren't there before DOES make a difference in that area of New York.

I live in Las Vegas, not a cornfield.
And as I said: those 25,000 people with high salaries are going to SPEND money in that area. And that is money that is NOT there now.
And the businesses that will service those people will thrive and hire new people creating new jobs.
And then THOSE people will also be spending money.

And on down the chain. For every action, a reaction. And with job growth it's a positive thing.

I saw the same thing happen in the Upstate Of South Carolina when I lived there.
BMW built a plant between Greenville and Spartanburg in the late 1990's.
The entire upstate was hurting economically because it was primarily a textile area and huge plants were shuttered across the region as the textile industry moved to China.

BMW came in and revitalized everything.

The town I lived in was Greer. It was a dead little town. After BMW it now has a revitalized BEAUTIFUL downtown area full of bars, restaurants and shopping.

It changed people's lives for the better all the way around.

Amazon would have done the same for that area of New York.

And other companies would follow if given the proper tax incentives.
New York is fucking itself with high taxes.

But your mind is made up, so I'm just wasting facts into a black hole.

The 25,000 jobs are for qualified people. It’s a lot of jobs but are they opening a facility to process online orders, or a store? The latter will affect local business but the former won’t impact at all

That video was shocking. I’m not aware of people living in Walmart parking lots around here. Those people had some expensive motor homes. My parents had a 25’ Executive motor home that was $25k new in 1978 or 1979. Used were half that and besides driving it yourself, you needed access to electricity or a recharge on your generator. Walmart park people had some costly items. One had a refrigerator that wasn’t part of the unit because they’re generally drawers built into the kitchen cabinets that are refrigerated. Same with freezer to save space.

Do they dump the toilet uhh stuff in the lot?? We’d go to a special area at a rest stop to empty the drain tub.

They have no physical address so how are welfare checks sent? Direct deposit? Then ATM in Walmart?

I’m going to Walmart tomorrow in fact and will seriously look for residents. I’m usually looking for handicapped parking spaces but tomorrow I’ll focus elsewhere.

I wonder if the kids go to school. It’s so sad that kids grow up this way. I can’t fathom living in a trailer with others and no bathrooms, no running water, boxed food, no friends and no concept of another life.

Amazon would run even more of those type places out of business and the business

This. NYC needs QUALITY businesses not this Lex Luthor motherfucker. Fuck him and his dick pics and his mistress and his "micromanaging".

The US government should not be giving money to any business as an incentive to move anywhere. I like Robbie's idea. If New York has $3 billion to give away in tax cuts to Amazon, why not lower taxes for everyone by $3 billion. That alone will bring in business and create jobs.

It's clueless idiots who think that stupid loud mouth cunt is the reason they left. She is just background noise and part of the faction that is dividing the democratic party and why they are a mess.

You want to point your finger at someone? Michael Gianaris is the one who ultimately fucked New York. This is the one who someone who bought real estate in LIC should put a bullet in his head.

You retards who get all upset about 3 billion in tax breaks can't even do the math to realize the revenue and taxes that Amazon would have brought in was 100x more than that.

Simple minded tools.

I don't want to miss commenting on this either.

Idiot

Clueless idiot.

Lowering the taxes by 3 billion doesn't change the scenario. Bringing in 25,000 jobs (with an average salary of 150k) and revitalizing an area brings in much more than 3 billion.

But this is why the usual idiots post here. This is like the trailer park of the industry.

You're kidding yourself that mega corp selling retail is good for community employment.
They don't pay enough and kill off jobs that do pay enough.

Find a Walmart and see a bunch of broke mother fuckers living in the parking lot.

Walmart broke so many people that they feel guilty enough to let people live in the parking lot.

But your mind is made up, so I'm just wasting facts into a black hole.

This is a current GFY member's situation right? One that posts here often?

BMW came in and revitalized everything.

The town I lived in was Greer. It was a dead little town. After BMW it now has a revitalized BEAUTIFUL downtown area full of bars, restaurants and shopping.
Dude, compared to a city like NY, Greer is a fucking corn field.

500 jobs coming to Greer or Greenville would have a way bigger impact than 25k in the NY Tri-state area.

So you are saying lowering overall taxes in an area won't attract new business?

Your simple mind needs practicing it's reading comprehension. I was for the $3 billion incentive and the post you replied to never mentioned that you just made an ignorant assumption you pulled out of your ass.

Location plays a part, no question. However, a ghetto and a suburb are two very different things. Lowering taxes in a ghetto with high crime and shitty living conditions is not going to have the same effect as lowering taxes in an established, middle class community.
