The technology isn't there. The only way this could ever work is if EVERY car on the road was self-driving and connected to the same network. Banning human drivers = bad idea

Self driving cars are already here, and 5G networks eliminate latency. 3200+ people die in car accidents every day (1.25 Million per year) with another 20 to 50 Million per year hurt. https://www.asirt.org/safe-travel/road-safety-facts/ .

I have a friend of mine who went through a difficult time during the recession, and a few years ago got a job as a long distance truck driver. He was away from his family a lot, but he really enjoys what he does and makes a ton of money. He also moved from California to Texas, so his cost of living is down. He is happy as a clam. I worry about him and his job security now.

We've seen this before with technology. They said computers were going to take over all of our jobs. Instead, computers enabled us to do our jobs much better. At the same time it created entire new industries for employees.

Some jobs will be replaced - such as cab drivers and truck drivers. Even making sandwiches and fast food employees. But some jobs will never be able to replaced. But some jobs will I doubt will ever be able to be replaced. I find it hard to believe that a robot will be able to look at my car, figure out what is wrong, and fix it automatically. Same with computers. I don't see a robot coming to my house and diagnosing my air conditioning, and then being able to climb up into the attic to fix it.

I might be wrong. Cars can always diagnose themselves, and perhaps in the future we can make cars that will be much more compatible for robots to work on. Perhaps we can make air conditioning units that can diagnose themselves and make them in a way so that robots can automatically fix them for us.

Imagine building a robot that can come into your house, remove your dishwasher, and replace it with a new one automatically. Some day we will get there... But I don't think it will be during our lifetime. Maybe our kid's lifetime.

I would love to see everyone having a self driving car. That would be amazing. Some day this will happen - we get closer and closer every day. The freeways and roads will all need to have sensors in them so everything can be tracked, including debris in the road.

So you want people to be banned from driving, AND poisoned with 5G radiation? How progressive

Trump doesn't drive. As long as you are a winner, like Trump, you shouldn't have to worry about driving.

Why do you even have a phone? Let your people take your calls for you.

Only losers do things for themselves.

That's right, keep avoiding the facts. Deflect! Deflect! These things crash. The trucks still need a person inside. But I'm the one living in a bubble. Lying clown

I specifically remember when uber said it had no plans to have a fleet of self driving cars and that the investment in self driving tech is just an experiment

yeah right...

This has likely been Uber's big play all along. They have invested heavily into self driving cars. It won't be happening tomorrow or even next year, but I wouldn't be shocked to see a lot of self driving Ubers in the next five years.

Truck driving is a massive employer. You are talking 3.5 million jobs in the US alone. These are pretty decent paying jobs.

What do those 3.5 million people do to replace that level of income?

Also the food service industry is something like 5 million jobs.

The same thing that happened when computers hit the work force will happen again.

I don't know how old you are, but they said that computers will be replacing employees in the work place in "ten years". Computers will enable us to work so much faster that one employee will be able to do the job of ten people. And that might be true... However, entire new industries were created in the process. Jobs lost due to computers were replace with.. jobs created by the computer industry. Entire industries were created because of the comptuers. We need people to design, build, and sell computers. We need people to write the software. We need people to maintain the computers, and we still need people to tell the computers what to do.

Fast food employees might eventually be replaced by robots. However, we will still need people to design the robots, program the robots, sell the robots, install the robots, and maintain them. And we will still need people to work at the restaurants.

Truck drivers and taxi cab drivers might eventually be placed by robots. We already have entire industries that design, build, sell, and maintain trucks. But will we need to make major changes to our infrastructure. We will need to build smarter roads, with more sensors and cameras, and we will still need people to monitor things.

Eventually we will not longer have to work. I am not sure if that will hit in our life time. We will have robots and machines and computers to do everything. Eventually we will have robots that will see a need for a restaurant, will design and build one, and we will have robots that will install the robots, and artificial intelligence to market the new restaurant to us. Eventually artificial intelligence will decide there is a new need for trucks or transports of a certain size, and will design, build, and market them to us. Eventually robots will be able to fix our trucks and cars, and when they can, they will be able to recycle them quickly.

What mankind will do to keep ourselves entertained at that point... I have no idea.

Without the Internet explosion there would be far fewer jobs around today. Even so the average wage of the average person has flat lined for decades. In many cases shrunk and in others disappeared. More people are reliant of welfare than ever before.

Burst your bubble and visit the real world.

Uber are doing this to save drivers wages, not pay more to fix the cars.

Explore the universe?

Think about it for a moment... If robots can mine the materials and build the rockets and living quarters that would allow mankind to explore all of the universe and make it very cheap to do it.... Wouldn't we explore the world?

Or maybe most of us would sit on the couch and watch TV.
