Just imagine the logistics of storing, indexing, and maintaining such a large amount of material. A lot of the tapes were very insignificant. Some of them have analog data from probes to the sun other boring stuff. You have to understand that such probes spit out tons of data. Some of the tapes can no longer even be used. We no longer have computers that can use them. Again, size is an issue - when they say they no longer have the computers that can use them, we aren't taking about desktops here but instead huge computers that take up entire rooms.
