Abigail Disney calls out Republican tax cuts

Documentary filmmaker, scholar, philanthropist, heiress and activist Abigail Disney—the granddaughter and great niece of Roy Disney and Walt Disney respectively—filmed a message for United States taxpayers in response to President Donald Trump and Republican leaders’ claims about the GOP tax cuts.

Disney said people should not believe what the Trump administration or GOP say happened with the tax cuts they received. Disney begins her video stating:

“Greetings from the 1%.”

She then clarifies that her forefathers did create the House of Mouse and shares a “Disney secret” as is her tradition for her videos. But then she makes clear her message is more important than a Disney behind the scenes peek. Disney states:

“…we in the 1% got a great Christmas present last year. I don’t know if you remember, it was called a very big tax break.”

“I didn’t need it, but the Republicans gave it to me anyway. And I hear if the Republicans do well in these midterms, they want to give me another one; an even bigger one, in fact.”

“It’s the darndest thing, isn’t it? I got a tax break, but you didn’t. Hmm…I’m sure that was an oversight.”

Disney then adds that many of the rich who received the tax cuts, were not sure what to do with them. So they bought superyachts. Which is a really big yacht. Disney continues:

“So anyway, 1%-ers are doing better than they ever have been doing and guess what? You are paying for all of it.”

“Remember when Republicans promised if you gave 1%-ers a tax cut, employers would increase your salary and hire more people and the economy would boom and there’d be rainbows and ponies and everything would be awesome?”

“In fact, Republicans have made that promise a bunch of times and I’m beginning to wonder when we’re gonna stop falling for that one.”

Disney then outlined what promises were made to taxpayers in more detail.

The election is not about Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh. The Trump administration and Republican goal is more tax cuts for the richest and fewer services for the poorest.

I think the point is a lot of peeps who don't need the money don't do that, and even if they do, what? more money to build new prisons? :/

when I lived in Belize I lived less than 10 feet from the shoreline. Paul Allen (Microsoft) had the 'smaller' of his two yachts parked out in the ocean right in front of my place for weeks.

I initially thought it was a cruise ship as it was so huge. had a helicopter on a platform on the back that looked like a toy in comparison to the size of the yacht. every night lit up like xmas, sure the energy bill for all that alone is more than most peeps in North America make in a year.

my neighbor and one of my friends and I wanted to row out to ask to be adopted, with me in front so we all didn't get shot approaching the boat

but yeah, tax cuts for the super-rich don't make much sense. tax cuts to low and middle income peeps however means that more money gets injected into local economies. is anyone even still on that 'trickle down' train?

I like paying taxes. it's a privilege to share with my nation of residence

I think that a lot of this "tax cuts for the rich" stuff comes from the way our tax code is set up.
Those "rich" people pay the vast majority of taxes.
More than 44% of Americans don't pay any taxes at all.

So when an across the board tax cut happens...OF COURSE the people who pay all the taxes are going to benefit the most.
It's simple math.

If you don't pay any taxes (as almost half the people in the U.S. don't) then they will get NO benefit from a tax cut.
If you pay $10,000 in taxes in a year you will get a good benefit in the ratio to what you pay.
If you pay tens of millions of dollars to the govt. every year....you will also get a good benefit in the ratio of what you pay.

But proponents of high taxes and bigger govt. are always trying to divide people and cause rifts.
And saying that the "rich" got HUGE tax breaks is one way to do it.

But no. They got the exact SAME percentage cut as the guy paying in $500 in taxes.

Nobody seems to talk about the fact that the top ONE percent pay $39.48% of ALL taxes.
The top FIVE percent (of which I'm part of) pay 59.97% of ALL taxes.

And get this: the top TEN percent pay 70.88% of ALL taxes.

That means that 90% of the people in the U.S. only pay 29.12% of all taxes.

It doesn't take a mathematical genius to see that YES...when a tax cut happens, people who PAY taxes get the cut.

But the media and Democrat politicians, looking to stir shit, never talk about that.

The payroll taxes you are talking about are for their social security...and they get refunds for all the money that is taken out of their checks for actual income tax.

As for sales tax....that isn't what we are talking about.
Rich people pay far more in sales tax than most people earn.

There is no way around it...people that pay the most taxes will indeed benefit the most with a tax cut for everyone.

well of course. someone who makes 60k per year will pay less in income tax than someone who earns $6 mil per. that's simple math and you can't fault peeps for being at the bottom of a percentage structure. plus as the middle class shrinks and income disparity expands, the richest get richer, and will thus pay even more compared to anyone else.

point is, the uber-rich won't buy more stuff in local economies just because they got a tax cut. whereas what is left of the middle class and low-income peeps use that money to spend. to enhance their lives and families and benefit the economy by injecting dollaz into it.

small business (aka the non-Walmarts of your nation) need some more tax cuts as well.

as Sarettah wrote, the poor do pay taxes. sales tax in particular as the poor spend a greater percentage of their income on fixed expenses and those such as food, bus fare, etc. that's percentage of income working the other way

lived in a lot of nations, all of which had vastly different cultures outside of music. that econ rule in our current international system is unfortunately true everywhere though :/

I'm not an American, or a capital D democrat. I'm a Canadian social democrat living in the Caribbean.

Plus I hate divisions. firmly believe we all have a least one thing in common and can build on that.

There is no reason to be afraid, by your own admission you and Claudia are kicking much deserved azz. I very much admire the success you both have achieved. not very sure of the current tax structure for peeps/corps/small biz in the US as I haven't looked into it recently, but no matter how much more you get, would you not prefer that tax cut you don't need going to a family who would spend their money locally? on things they do need?

for real, how much money does any given person need and what is their responsibility as the most privileged members of a shared nation/state/whatever ?

I don't have the universal answer, only my own personally. wish I did.

Meanwhile...those of us in the porn industry haven't been able to raise prices in 20 years. And we have to compete with free porn on mega-tubes...as those mega-tubes make millions off advertising off the backs of content producers.
And of course the cost of living always goes up.
