Dallas police have released the name of the officer they say mistakenly entered a man's home before shooting him dead.

However, a previously reported manslaughter charge has been placed on hold.

Officer Amber Guyger, 30, had finished a shift Thursday and was still in uniform when she told authorities she thought the apartment of her neighbor, 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, was her own.

Jean was fatally shot. It is not clear what prompted the shooting but Guyger reportedly called police following the incident.

"Right now, there are more questions than answers,"Chief Ulysha Renee Hall said Friday during a press conference.

Police called the situation “very unique" and said Guyger was tested for drugs and alcohol afterward.

Per CBS News, the Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation and have placed a manslaughter charge against Guyger on hold.

"The Texas Rangers had an opportunity to interview the officer," Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said Saturday. "Based on that interview, they asked us to hold off on the warrant until they had an opportunity to investigate some of the information that was provided during that interview."

Jean was a graduate of Harding University in Arkansas and was said to be an active member at his church, according to reports.

Jean’s mother, Allison Jean, said the news was devastating and suggested on KXAS that race may have been a factor in her son's death.

"I didn't know she was white until now," Jean said. "If it was a white man would it have been different? Would she have reacted differently?"

Of course she would have been treated differently. She was free and they had no idea where she was for a few days while the department investigated things. Had she just been a regular civilian she would have been arrested on the scene and would likely be sitting in jail right now.
