I was up in Providence, visiting my mom in the hospital, when a nurse came in. Ignoring us, she did vitals, checked IVs, then I was introduced to her. Said “hi” and she responded with ...
Me: Hi
Her: Yanno if you lost weight you’d not be in a wheelchair
Me: You don’t know my issues
Mom: Why would you say that? My daughter nearly died. She’s lost one hundred pounds and looks good, but she wants to lose thirty more. How can? (Interrupted)
Her: Her legs move and her head and arms move. Obviously she’s in the ‘chair so she doesn’t have to walk.
Mom: You’re a rude person and I want you out of here. I want another nurse.
Her: I’m as smart as a doctor
Mom: Ha,
Her: You ...
Mom: I SAID GET OUT (pushes buzzer) (getting upset physically hurt my mom)
Me: Who the fuck are you to judge me? You don’t know a damned thing about me
KNOCK KNOCK
Head Nurse comes in and we all talk. I yelled “stop” then told the nurse what happened. She looked at all of us and asked the other nurse what she said.
Original nurse: *pointing at me*. People like her sit in a wheelchair and collect disability that we pay for coz she’s too fat to walk or work.
Head nurse: You expressed that to her? Not knowing her condition you embarrassed her like that?
Me: Yes she did. (I began crying from embarrassment of it all)
Head nurse: Get your things and leave. You’re no longer employed here
Nurse: Are you fuckin kidding me?
CNA with me: She’s not kidding. You insulted my friend and her mother. Get out before I go ghetto on your ass
Me: I laughed so hard it hurt!
Nurse leaves, grumbling about “these fucking Jews” and “... bring a fuckin gangsta with dem”.
All we could do was laugh and laugh. Head nurse tried to apologize but I told her she had nothing to apologize about. She said that nurse was a new hire, hired during their recent strike.
Going home we just laughed and laughed. I call her “gangsta” now! But in this day and age you’d expect a professional to act correctly. Personal attacks on strangers are never nice or accepted.
The hospital sent a letter, apologizing for the nurse. I said we should ask or demand $100k for harassment and aggravation. No one agreed!
I’ll admit my CNA friend talked with an attitude but in that situation, it was warranted. I’m still in shock it happened. Shocked a woman would say something like that to a stranger knowing people carry guns around with them. I know it happens here but between the forum name, usernames and topics, we expect rancor. It’s the Internet, though, not in person. Here it’s funny most of the time and we laugh and move on.
I put this on my blog and already a friend commented that she’d have slapped the nurse into the next county!
Meanwhile, my mother called and keeps saying, “what kind of world do we live in? In my day .....” . I said the same thing to someone today, “in my day” and I realized that I’m no longer in my twenties but twice that ....
I’ll be glad when this weekend is over. This week has been a nightmare!
