Interesting article on Visa, porn and the Gov't

Visa goes after porn sites --- government intervention?

Wonder if iBill paid that 6 million dollar fine?

Also interesting that AVS is still in Visa's sites - and the link down the bottom of the page to the Acacia matter is worth reading as well.

"Chargebacks, one of the biggest headaches of processing credit cards for porn sites, typically occur when, say, someone's wife finds out he's been buying porn. Rather than owning up, the aggrieved party tells the credit-card company that he's shocked--shocked--that someone else was purchasing porn on his card, and demands that the charges be removed. "
--------------------------------

Well, I thought the guy actually understood until I saw they used the Chicken Little posse as one source...

Visa isn't doing work for the government, they are protecting their brand image. Pure and simple.

If what you do doesn't fit in with their idea of what is appropriate they will terminate you. Very easy to grasp.

This part of the article really pissed me off

The controversy once again casts an unwelcome light on the symbiotic relationship between porn operators and the legitimate companies that allow them to thrive by quietly processing their credit-card payments and providing server hosting

Oh so since we're porn operators our companies aren't legitimate?

Hey Forbes

I have been saying for a while that Visa/Mastercard are doing this because they want the new bankruptcy laws to go through, as it's costing them a ton of money each year. They are kissing up by helping to 'remove' porn as well as keeping tabs on it, and the goverment will kiss back with a nice bankruptcy law package for them.

The quote on why chargebacks happen was interesting -- no comment on how JoeHusband claiming he doesn't know what the charge is -- is FRAUD -- and illegal!

Visa allows the fraud

Why are we so shocked when companies of bankers, with shareholders to contend with don't like what we do?

We as an industry are judged as a whole not individuals, so when one of us does wrong we are all branded with the same iron.

Are we judged as Hugh Heffners or Max Hardcores? It does not matter what we are. It matters how we are perceived.

The Internet porn industry is the newest and by far the least regulated of all the porn industries.

So when it comes to bankers allowing their system to clear and collect money for us let?s look at the two arguments from the their side.

REASONS FOR.
More business and therefore more money. How much is debatable, some say it is less that 1% of their over all business.

REASON?S AGAINST.
It?s the porn industry. (Bad publicity)
Some webmasters sell illegal products. (Child porn.)
Some webmasters sell products into countries where they are illegal. (Beastiality, Skat, Urination, Rape, Incest, Porn)
Some of the legal sites are very close to illegal and highly distasteful tomany people. (SEG & Max Hardcore plus others.)
Some sites carry pirated material which puts companies profitting from the site at risk of being sued.
A lot of them do little to nothing to reduce it. (Adult Check was not the first company to say ?Nothing we can do about it?)
A lot of sites have great tours and little behind them. (Basically rip offs)
Some webmasters do little to pay tax or hold proper records.
A lot of webmasters Spam sites to unsuspecting email addresses. (Some of these people are shareholders in Visa)

So the next time someone shoots down a company like Visa for wanting to bring in rules and regulations, let?s think about it from the other side.

If we clean up our act we may find it could be easier to do business.

Well said but no one wants to look at that, also add the third party processors who know some of their clients are thieves but allow them to still process because they run so much money thru them.
