    Craft Beers?

I usually stick to Mexican beer and Coors light. Thinking about trying one of these craft beers or IPA's I see.

I'm just looking for something fresh and new, nothing fruity or sweet or sour and certainly nothing that some hipster college kid would drink.

    Any suggestions?

200 beers is nothing; there are hundreds of new breweries every year.

So, where do you live? I don't want to suggest something you can't get.

Oh, and these days for sure, not all IPAs are created equal.

There are some "lager-ish" brews being brewed local to me; but some states I find breweries do a lot of lagers.

There is a guy that knows me from GFY; he recently opened a brewery in SoCal that is all non-alcoholic beers; including an IPA.

Good rule of thumb for IPAs if you are new to them; look for IBU under 60

Coors Light to an IPA is too big of a jump, you won't like it.

Go for a craft Pilsner and work your way up from there.

I've been into pale lager's lately but 2 years ago I would not have touched one.

I hate to break it to you, but you're already drinking what the college kids drink.

We are currently in a golden age for beer drinkers. If it turns out you like IPA's, then you will have lots of options. I don't particularly care for them - the grapefruit nose is a turnoff for me - preferring stouts and porters, so my choices are usually limited, especially in the warmer months.

The only thing to do is get out there and try some different stuff and figure out what you like. Most of the tap-house places will let you sample - or will sell flights.

Every time you go to a brewery/brewpub (they are the breweries that sell food) order a flight. Try them all, but drink them in the order put in front of you, and give each one at least 3 sips before deciding you don't like it.

It's all about the flights. 3-5 oz each, means no commitment to something you don't like.

IPAs are changing A LOT, so much so that the Brewers Association just added new categories for the juicy/hazy/milkshake shit.

So many experimental hops out there that it is tough to find a good ole west coast IPA anymore.

Yea this is probably true, I just by "college kids" I was mainly meaning those fancy craft brew/IPA's that you know..the typical college hipster would order at a bar.

Thanks a lot for all the detailed information in this thread. I'm definitely a novice when it comes to beer. I am primarily a Whiskey man but when I do drink beer its the ones mentioned in my original post. Getting kind of bored of my old routine so this provides me with a great starting point.

I don't believe we are FB friends, I will shoot you a PM with my info and we can connect there. I'd definitely be interested in getting involved in something local here to learn more and maybe make a few new beer drinking buddies.

I am POSITIVE you can find a locally brewed Mexican lager easily this time of year.

Ambers are staples at most places.

Pineapple it not usually bitter. 80 IBU sounds like a marketing gimmick.

Isn't microbrewery a much more fitting term?? It also took craft to build the large-scale breweries.

                                                                Microbreweries, nanobreweries, brewpubs = craft

The latest move, since big beer is buying up craft breweries, thus creating "crafty" breweries, is to call it "Independent"

                                                                They even have a label.

A microbrewery/nanobrewery/brewpub creates craft beer. The microbrewery is the building/equipment. Craft beer is the product coming out of it.
