    What/who qualifys as a school shooting survivor?

    Say there was a shooting at a large school campus. One square mile with twenty buildings. One shooter goes in one building, shoots three people in three different rooms.. Who qualifys as a school shooting survivor?

          I would say being in the open as bullets whizzed by would qualify.

          I served during Desert Storm but I would never call myself a Desert Storm veteran because I was stationed in Hawaii servicing aircraft that flew to the Persian Gulf.

              To me it would be if you were potentially in harms way. For example. A shooter goes into a classroom and opens fire. If you are in a class nearby, hear the shots, and must take action to make sure you are safe, I wouldn't have a problem saying they are survivors. However, someone in a random building a mile away on the other side of the campus who never even knew it was happening isn't.

                              Anyone who was on campus at the moment of the shooting.

                              Even if they never saw the shooter, they were there when the alarms went off and then the announcement "shelter in place" and "this is no a drill". Hiding behind a locked door in a classroom closet while your classmates are being shot and killed.... Qualifies you as a survivor.

                              What makes it even worse is it's kids.

                              One time I was picking up my kid at high school when shots rang out. There was a police shooting two blocks from the school. My kid was walking across a field towards us; My wife and I were waiting in my Jeep. When the shots rang out my daughter just froze. I waved on towards us and ten seconds later the school went into lock down. My kid quickly hopped in my Jeep and were out of there. I'm sorry, kids shouldn't have to go through this shit.

                                  You have to be actually hit/grazed by a bullet in my book.

                                  I hear gun shots from a nearby section 8 complex damn near daily.. Does that make me a survivor? Nope, not until I get hit or grazed. Are the kids in that complex called survivors? Nope.. Just every day life.
