My Russian friend, many Americans refer to America as a Democracy because they live in a state, run as a Representative Democracy, within the Republic, they aren't referring to America as a "Direct Democracy" which is how you, as a foreigner sipping Rogaska Crystal and nibbling on Syrniki morsels , is interpreting it.

especially people who did not vote for trump have seen in the last elections that the will of the majority of individuals (what is the basic meaning of democracy) is not taking place in this system.
you can ask many people in many other countries the question if they believe that they live in a democracy and the most will say yes.
actually only 4,4% of the world population is living in a 100% democracy according the democracy index. I think one of the major problems in US is that nobody without a lot of money and many lobby connections can ever be a POTUS.
