GOP senators turn on Trump express concern over potential ‘self-pardon'

Since the GOP tanked during this week's midterms they are now turning against Trump to be on the right side of history

‘Nobody is above the law’: Record number of Republican senators express concern over potential Trump ‘self-pardon’

Sen. Cory Gardner has joined the ranks of Republicans criticizing President Donald Trump for claiming he can pardon himself.

“No one’s above the law,” Gardner told the Denver Post Friday. “I think if he were to try, it would be a really bad idea.”

The Colorado senator is the latest in a string of Republicans who either condemned the president’s self-pardon claim or said they don’t believe he has the authority to do so. Most notable among them is House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) who on Wednesday said Trump “obviously” shouldn’t pardon himself.

Early on Monday morning, Trump tweeted that he has the “absolute” right to pardon himself, but wouldn’t be doing so because he’d “done nothing wrong.” The claim came after his attorney, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, repeatedly told reporters and pundits that the president has the constitutional right to self-pardon.

Why exactly does he need to pave the way?

it's the rudy strategy in the war of public opinion. He said it himself. It's a tried and true and obvious strategy.

Just like rudy paved the way for trump to reveal he paid stormy.

getting ahead of the story, i think it's called. they are getting the public acclimated to pardons.

So you're saying that he is hoping less people complain about pardoning himself and his henchmen in the future - by first pardoning others that people are complaining about him pardoning now?

it's been done plenty of times. Rudy just did it with the stormy payment. it does work. I don't know if it will work here.

I am an independent. I do not vote along party lines. I vote for the person who is right.

However.... I will never vote Republican again. I am furious over what is happening right now. Obama went eight years without any drama during a very difficult time, and now... Every fucking day it's nothing but vile bullshit coming out of the White House. Today it's how the White House got a warrant for information on reporter's cell phone? Are you fucking shitting me? It's now acceptable to get warrant on a reporter because of a leak? Holy crap.

I agree he did it with the Stormy payment - planned for some time.

I can't see that such a strategy would work with pardons, particularly if there is true criminal activity that would require pardoning.

You are seeing a situation where Trump and his henchmen are in true, legal jeopardy - and the use of pardons NOW prepares the public for agreeing to pardons for Trump and his henchmen in the future?

Eh - can't go along with you on that logic.

I agree, I'm not so sure it would work re: pardons, in fact, IMO I think it's a ridiculous strategy. But it makes sense that trump legal is using it here. There's no reason not to, right? I read earlier trump has now reached out to NFL athletes for them to let him know who they want pardoned.

all part of the pardon strategy in play right now.

It's a TERRIBLE strategy and can only make things worse if your plan is to pardon yourself and your henchmen.

No, the GOP strategy is clear: denounce the self-pardoning Trump so they have political cover (CYA) but then quietly, in secret, back Trump 100%. You just watch.

IF his plan is to pardon himself and henchmen out of crimes - why the signals? Why give people MORE ammunition for when it happens? Why not simply wait - and then pardon yourself and your henchmen - and then deal with it?

People, including myself, are not going to sit here and watch Trump pardon himself and his henchmen if there is proof he is committing crimes. It's fantasy. There are no Trump-supporting journalists that would agree with him pardoning himself. It's fun to debate the constitutional ramifications, but he would lose nearly all his support. That is not an end game strategy.

I don't see how this conflicts? I agree, it's a cya move. because trump and his henchmen are about to get fucked and consequently he will go on a pardoning spree.

meanwhile, if trump survives this, repubs can't be seen as not kissing the ring.

                                                1. to his henchmen not to worry, i'll pardon you.

                                                2. The other is to condition his base to the deep state conspiracy and his pardons are for victims of it, like he is claiming. That's why he's asking NFL players for referrals, so he can pardon victims of the deep state DOJ.

1.) Why the signal, which the sending of causes him problems? You don't think he has any way of telling them the same thing without a public pardon?

2.) His base already understands the deep state conspiracy. Well, they probably don't - but believe it exists so no conditioning necessary.

You don't actually think trump all the sudden cares about the NFL or NFL players do you? It's clever really, and kills 2 birds+ with one stone.

Think of it this way, when the investigation reveals that trump is a criminal, he can point back to all the pardons as proof the ENTIRE investigation is illegitimate.

it not only makes sense, it fits with previous actions and fits the narrative.

We had 8 years of an ass kissing press bow to the President and put everything he said or did on a pedestal, while kicking right leaning media out of briefings. Now we have a master troll who doesn't need the media... at all. He just goes right around them and talks directly to the people, as a real person would.

He happens to be up at 3am, makes a tweet and then controls the news cycle for 3 days by prodding silly, hysterical people. They can't control the news anymore and the media and the left are freaking out every single day about it. At the same time, their ratings are plummeting.

We've never seen this before in history and its just comical. We had 8 years of an ass kissing press bow to the President and put everything he said or did on a pedestal, while kicking right leaning media out of briefings. Now we have a master troll who doesn't need the media... at all. He just goes right around them and talks directly to the people, as a real person would.

He makes the media dance every single day. He happens to be up at 3am, makes a tweet and then controls the news cycle for 3 days by prodding silly, hysterical people. They can't control the news anymore and the media and the left are freaking out every single day about it. At the same time, their ratings are plummeting.

I still think it's a possibility, but an equally likely possibility is that Trump trolls on an issue - he gets the fringe left to freak out - the normal left is then stuck defending the fringe left position - which motivates independents.

                                                                                                We'll see in November!
