It is a theory of US constitutional law holding that the President has the power to control the entire executive branch and this would obviously include the Justice Department. The doctrine is based in Article Two of the United States Constitution, which vests "the executive power" of the United States in the President.

Thus, can Trump, in theory, pardon himself?

If one embraces this theory, then the answer would be YES and there are at least three known SC Justices that do embrace this theory and would possibly rule in his favor; Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.

Nixon used this theory when he was trying to avoid the subpoena for the tapes.

He failed, but that was then and this is now and there is no telling how this level of partisanship would effect rulings from this kind of Supreme Court.

Then there is the odious aroma from the election itself and the lack of questioning and/or legal challenge in terms of its legitimacy.

We were invaded, yet we just accept the outcome, even though that invasion influenced that outcome and worse, do nothing to protect the 2018 election cycle.

If Trump were accused of a crime and impeachment proceedings were started then he pardoned himself to get out of it (or pardoned himself to avoid the proceedings ever started) I would think enough people would be pissed that he wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting elected again.
