Which is better - buying premium WP theme or hacking a good free one?

I recently paid nearly $100 for a single licence of Betube premium WP theme. Still trying to get my head around it given the total lack of instructions or tutorials, although to be fair I havevn't contacted support yet. Still, after several days fiddling about with it it still looks nothing like as advertised on their demo. At the same time I installed a free tube style WP theme and with a couple of tweeks it's already looking great.

What do affiliates here generally prefer - spending money on premium themes or customizing free ones? I'm finding the 'child theme' requirement a little difficult to get to grips with, but once that is mastered and with a little knowledge of html and css, it seems like it will be easier and cheaper to just hack free themes.

Yes, I prefer to maintain my site manually and with my own copy text for each post, but Google doesn't seem to care anymore and just ranks adult sites by traffic and time spent on site I think.

Thanks, looks interesting. I think maybe wordpress sites are penalized by Google as well, or at least having a different CMS would be a SEO advantage.

If you have a minimum knowledge of html and css, then it's easier to fix the visual part (design) of the site yourself.
But in premium themes, the main thing is not design, but additional plugins that are not available for free. Buying a premium theme just because of design is pointless.

If it's me, I will use free WP theme, it's good enough.
Then use the money to SEO, buy seo gigs via Fiverr or something like that.

I honestly think that you can do your job quite well using free WP themes, there are lots of them and you can customize the colors, the writing, etc. If you are picky, I reccomend you to search even deeper, on colorib. You "can get" is not "you get"

The CMS engine code is separate from the PHP, CSS & HTML to serve pages.

You should care about the creator of your code being anonymous with encrypted code on your sever. You know, back doors, viruses, traffic skimming, theft, etc.

there are themes at themeforest which are practically useless, way overswamped with too many options and features and it's impossible to configure them to do only what you need.

I used to buy premium themes for a long time.
Meanwhile I only use free themes.
Why?
Because on mobile devices all themes look the same. You mostly can't tell if it is a free or a premium one.
One column, header, ad, posts, ads, footer. The same order on 95% of all sites viewed on mobile.

Beide that, most premium themes try to catch users with hundreds of features, which bloat the theme and make it slower. If you use a "blank" theme you can easily add and feature needed by plugins or coding.

I know, my english is bad. But your german might be even worse

Thanks, nice simple design and easy to tweek. That's really all I need I think. I doubt very much that the average surfer is impressed by 'sliders' and all the fancy crap, they just want something to fap to.
