The biggest regret in my life originated with GFY

It all started when I read a post that suggested we should all liquidate our assets and invest in an upcoming launch of a new commodity. Upon research I discovered that this new thing they were raving about was based on no tangible resource to back it up.

Even though it sounded completely nuts to me (and a truckload of fellow GYFers), I was ready to invest $1000 with the idea that it couldn't be as risky as all the bullshit stocks that crashed on me. When it came time to pull the trigger, I got cold feet and couldn't do it.

I can't even imagine what that $1000 investment in Bitcoin would be worth today!

I also wonder how many GFYers are now multimillionaires or billionaires.

Yeah yeah yeah, I regret not playing the lottery every day because someone won $200 million.

You forgot all the people who got in quick only to get pumped and dumped.
You can still invest in the next Hawk Tuah coin.

Early buyers who held during crashes made money; but others lost their ass.
Buyers at $100k just lost their ass in less than a year.

    Good luck.

You may be on to something, lol!

When I first saw it being offered, I wondered who who be crazy enough to invest in a crypto coin she endorsed.

The Hawk Tuah meme coin (HAWKTUAH) is currently worth about $0.00014 per token. Because it is a highly speculative, low-value cryptocurrency, its price fluctuates rapidly and it often has very low daily trading volume across decentralized exchanges.

      Then Trump jumped in...

The "Official TRUMP" (TRUMP) meme coin is currently trading around $1.85 to $1.90. It launched on the Solana blockchain in January 2025 with an initial coin offering (ICO) and has experienced extreme price volatility.

All-Time High (ATH): Reached roughly $75 (with some variants peaking between $75 and $118) in January 2025.

All-Time Low (ATL): Fell to approximately $1.50 to $2.13 in mid-2025/2026.

It's not your fault that after 8 years someone decided to manipulate the market around internet money that previously was only used for narcotics and human trafficking.

The 3-4 people in my extended friend group who had bitcoin before it went to the moon... all had bad luck and tragic endings

One of my ex co-workers hit a jackpot with DOGE during the big cough... and soon after his wife started a bitter divorce and his kids turned against him!

I am the opposite. I had a domain I got off of a fresh registration and wanted to flip it. GFY made fun of me and I ended up selling it just for a few hundred dollars but a couple months later the new owner sold it for 35k. And even worse, it was sold in Rick Latona‘s auction so I had to see a fucking press release about it.. That’s not anywhere near the numbers we’re talking about with bitcoin but still it was kind of devastating for me. It was a tube domain.

I'll add a similar story. I helped someone out with something once, just as a favour, and they wanted to compensate me. I said not to worry, but they insisted - Something about not wanting to be beholden to me down the line... I could appreciate that..

Anyway, they asked if wanted $100 via paypal or $100 in bitcoin. Well this was EXTREMELY early days... And while I had heard 'whispers' of something called 'bitcoin' I didn't really understand how I could keep it / spend it / store it etc... The wealth of instant knowledge and instant sign up wallets and exchanges just simply didn't exist at this point...

So I decided to phone up (yes, using an actual landline!) a fellow GFY'er with the offer that if he understood what to actually do with it, I'd take it and he could deal with it for me, on my behalf, and in return, half its value would be his. 50/50

Turned out that he had just left the country that afternoon, and wouldn't be contactable for a day or so, so I decided to just take the $100 via paypal instead...

When we spoke about it a few years ago, I was saying 'Think what it would have been worth now! - Think of the money we would have, he sagely replied - Yes, perhaps, but we wouldn't have kept it and not touched it - We would have been dipping into it, and no doubt cashed it out way before it got to the value it was (a couple of years ago) and he was 100% right...

No point in worrying about something that didn't happen

Man that's disappointing to see you're still trying to fight Bitcoin with those lies that it's primarily "for narcotics and trafficking". Studies, facts have proven this false for years, and you know this, I remember showing you the data/studies years ago, you are fully aware.

You're a smart guy and of course nobody believes you actually think that, it just makes you look dishonest as hell.

Does Bitcoin threaten your tradfi investments?

I bought only one for $80 like the cheap fuck I was. I had no willpower and I sold it when Bitcoin went to about $1,000. At the time, only Franck and Edgeprod were gung ho on it. I am happy if Franck made money, but the millions Edgeprod made makes me so sick. I tracked his wallet after I sold him my Dogecoin and he sold at almost the peak it looked like. $18 million or some goddamn amount. Honestly can't even stand it. Of all the lies he told, he had to be right about crypto? Fuck.

I don't and never will care about bitcoin. You do you. I'm trying to reassure the original poster that it was totally reasonable not to risk significant money on it 10-15 years ago. You don't have to jump into every crypto post on GFY like a jihadist defending the quran, it's not going to affect your "investments" either.

To claim that pre-2016 it was used for anything other than illegal commerce is being wilfully ignorant. Most people I know who got lucky by hodling from pre-$100 prices were buying it so they could transact on silk road.

To believe that it is not being manipulated by the same people who manipulate stocks and fiat currencies is just stupid.

His group ran the bitcoin atms out of coffee shops and did cash exchanges in the back room. I wonder how he's doing now, it was around $450 back then.

I was buying at least 1btc a day to buy accounts and proxies from russians for blackhat marketing.

I would never expect you to care about Bitcoin, but you care enough to come into every thread and suggest it's only for illicit purposes, ask yourself why is that? You have a reason or agenda for doing so, and it's pretty iniquitous.

Why am I here in Bitcoin threads? Because I'm arguing against people like you who dishonestly framing Bitcoin that way. Will it ever affect me personally? Nope. But people like you trying to frame it negatively might prevent others from taking the time to learn it fully. Dishonesty needs to be countered with facts/truth sometimes, am I right?

I don't give a shit if you or anyone has interest or uses Bitcoin, my intent is urging others to not believe the bullshit and to learn it for themselves.

Everyone I know who held Bitcoin from those early days did it as hedge against devaluing fiat currencies. They learned it enough to be able to weather any storm (of crashes, FUD, and bear markets). To say those knowledgeable people are lucky or that hedging against inflation is illicit activity is beyond fucked.

A lot of people used it for illicit activities then, a lot didn't.

The illicit activities usage on Bitcoin today is almost none, much less than USD or any fiat currencies because it's trackable.

                                Check https://endthefud.org

The new data is better. With KYC being a requirement on almost all faucets/exchanges combined with advanced chainalysis services, its become a terrible use case for criminals.

That'd be wild and if you believe that please share your sources. Btw, you can be a miner if you wanted, with that single fact it breaks your theory.

The guy I knew personally who was hyping bitcoin in Vancouver was also a coke dealer He was very happy because he joined a bitcoin MLM and had made so much money that he could quit dealing. His group ran the bitcoin atms out of coffee shops and did cash exchanges in the back room. I wonder how he's doing now, it was around $450 back then.

I was buying at least 1btc a day to buy accounts and proxies from russians for blackhat marketing.
Let's also not forget Epsteins involvement (and investment) in the early days

                                      https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...epstein-crypto

And if someone doesn't believe it read it yourself in Epsteins emails: https://jmail.world/
                                      (search for "taaki" for example)

But I forgot - now that Epsteins emails have delivered actual proof that Trump and a bunch of his cronies are all pedos, the emails are suddenly a hoax and nobody ever believed they were in any way important.

Everyone I knew who was involved with coke and bitcoin is now dead... that's crazy because the same dude(s) I knew all lived in Gastown and were involved with the ATM machines too.

Well if they weren't dead they'd probably be in prison or under criminal investigations by now because every Bitcoin txn is forever stored on blockchain, and anytime one of the sender/receiver cashes out it'll be KYC'd and a forever money trail leading to them and to their capture. Criminals will primarily use cash.

even if you bought $1,000 worth back than you would never have held on to it until today.

These days crypto is not much more than a scam show. Bitcoin is manipulated constantly by the exchanges and big holders. Rug pulls... its just a big online scammy casino

Well Ripple/XRP and all altcoins are centralized, WEF-friendly, and/or anti-Bitcoin.

So after Chris Mallick of epass made off with thousands or in cases such as mine several tens of thousands, few months later I landed on the original and maybe only bit coin forum there was to discuss Chris, his antics, and where to go from here.

I wish somebody would have said.." bro.. forget all that and just plunk a few bucks, maybe a hundred or thousand or so in what this forum is all about.. and you'll forget allll about that little loss of yours" yeah hindsight is awesome

These days crypto is not much more than a scam show. Bitcoin is manipulated constantly by the exchanges and big holders. Rug pulls... its just a big online scammy casino

True. A buddy of mine from work bought a bitcoin or two in very early 2019 and panic sold it when it dropped a bit... vowing never to fall for this crypto stuff again

Bet he invested exactly 0 hours of work learning what he bought.

About his policy though, something MUCH more important is Trump banning CBDC's in USA. Such a great thing that I'm guessing Democrats will try to undo in the future, because CBDC's is what will give government absolute control over citizens and will put us on the path to 1984. I really don't understand how leftists think they're good or right while actively supporting CBDC's, one of the worst things for humanity.
