Seems they also raised the age limit to twenty-one.

The vast majority of teachers don't want to be armed. If they wanted to be police officers, they wouldn't have become teachers.

I am not sure how I feel about teachers having guns. However, I do know that the Broward County officers had no idea what kind of gun the shooter had. They claim they didn't even know he was inside the building. The Coral Springs officers showed up, ran past the cowering first responders and, took care of business. They are a much smaller department than Broward, yet they ran into the school and, lost not a single officer. An AR 15 and, the guns the deputies were carrying fire at the same speed, btw.

Its not so much about the speed at which they fire.

Its more about the size round, the velocity of it and what it will penetrate.

The AR 15 has 30 grounds. The pistols the Broward County police carry have 15. The Coral Springs Police Department had no trouble running into the building and, stopping the shooting. It wasn't a matter of being out gunned that kept the Broward County police out of the building. It was either a shocking act of being cowardly or, they truly thought the shooter was outside of the building. I find this excuse a little hard to accept but, they deserve to be able to tell their side of the story. My point was that everyone wants to blame it on a semi automatic weapon when there is much, much more to this. It has just now come out that along after 18 domestic violence calls, repeated pleas to stop this young man "From being becoming the next school shooter," a 911 call that he had put a gun to man's head, the shooter himself had called the police and, said that after his mother died he was in trouble....not once did the Broward County police do a thing. This kid should have had an arrest record, his life long bout with mental illness should have been in the background check database. If people were behaving with even a marginal amount of competency, he would not have been eligible to own any type of weapon. It is all very sad. Too many people are trying to politicize this tragedy instead of looking at everything that went wrong, so solutions can be found to make schools safer and, the officials that let this mentally ill kid fall through the cracks can be held accountable.

I was talking about this with my wife (a teacher) and said, "the thing that makes someone a good teacher is the very thing which would not make them a good gunfighter".

A person who doesn't have any teachers in their life wouldn't understand this. Actually, almost everyone doesn't understand what they're talking about regarding this issue. A gun fight is one of the most stressful situations anyone could ever be in, with the incredible noise and the knowledge that any second a piece of metal flying at 2000 FPS can end your life instantly. All of a sudden, we're going to train the educators of children to manage that kind of situation? The kind of situation law enforcement and soldiers are trained years for? It's a half-assed, moronic idea brought up to divert attention away from the real issue....an over-availability of assault weapons in our country.

Spend that money on more school supplies so teachers don't have to spend out of their own pocket and do something about the gun problem.

nobody gets paid enough to run alone in to gunfire...the police that ran in did it as a group, armed with assault rifles and they were wearing kevlar...

a single teacher with a handgun is not going to help much...plus it takes a special type of person with special training to remain level headed in such a situation and do the right thing...kids screaming and running through the hallways and he has to spot the shooter and take the shot without killing more kids in the process and not die...the shooter is going pew pew pew the whole time...

as much as I would like the kids to have a chance and for this scenario to be viable, I dont think a teacher can find the shooter in time and even if he does, I would not bet on him winning...

I just said that I don't know how I feel about teachers having gun. When the Coral Springs officers arrived, there were 4 Broward County cops cowering outside. Why even have officers patrol schools if they are not equipped to handle such situations? Was this guy just a decoration? As I've also said, the first responders have said they thought the shooter was outside. I find that difficult to believe but, they should be given the opportunity to present their side. Coral Springs is incredibly upset with Broward County right now. There have been protests and, public condemnation from Coral Spring authorities on how Broward County handled this. Then, then Broward County's sheriff, openly through all of the blame on the school's resident deputy and, suspended him without pay. All the while, on the sheriff's watch, multiple warnings
from multiple sources were ignored. There is not excuse that this kid was not arrested or baker acted, long before this. The truth is still coming out. It would be incredibly good if people could let this happen and, stop jumping on political band wagons. We should have had solutions 19 years ago, after the first mass school shooting in Columbine. Answers are there. People just have to stop being so political about it.
