Learn from my ignorance...

If you are like me and have an Athlon system that is prone to heat issues in the summer don't stop worrying about it during the winter. I ignored mine, and let it sit runnign 24/7 since november withought cleaning or checkign shit out. Here is why.....

Pc has been doing random reboots and BSOD's lately, so i ignored the warnings and went on as usual. Tonight I was posting in one of Nina's threads and as I hit submit my screen went black, piercing high pitched squeeling from the speakers and the cd drive kept shuffling. So I powered down, opened case and almost died from the dust. What I found after laying teh pc on its side under a light totaly shocked me. I found a cpu that hit 80 degrees C and a geforce 4 that had a stuck fan.

I then cleaned it out with alot of q-tips and paper corners. I then removed the cpu heatsink fan. This is what I found beneath it.... sad isn't it? There is no way I got air through that bitch.

The fan is fucking nasty.. thank god for q-tips and watter.

SO I got it all cleaned up and air moving nicely everywhere,..... then came teh two hours getting this POS to boot.

BSOD's of hell!
Stop errors galore, freezes galore.

Even the xp installer couldn't boot

FInally had to reset bios and laod optimal settings and jump my fsb down to 200 mhz to get windows to even start to boot. A few full sentence curses later it booted!

That's fucking it.... I'm getting a damn p4 that can handle the heat. As much as I hate their sloppy pipelines,,, i hate heat more.

server is getting hit too much at same time i think, no biggie right now....

The problem I have with AMD is the lack of thermal protection. It will not shut the system down like it is suposed to. All athlons have defective thermal diodes.

I had a similar issue with my GeForce I DDR card... I ran my machine 24 hours a day since I bought the damn thing, and one day I unlocked my workstation and everything was COMPLETELY blurry... it was insane. I called Sony the next day cause I thought it was my 21" monitor that went out... which would suck to have to UPS back to them for repair.

Opened up the box and it turned out the fan on the videocard stopped, cause it was all clogged with dust. I've been thinking perhaps a HEPA filtered air filter in my room might help with the dust issue.

actually, put cheesecloth on all your fan grills and all openings in the case.

I have been meaning to dot hat for months now... but of course, procrastinated

Clean your fucking house. There is no excuse for that. I have computers sitting here that have been running for 3+ years that have NEVER been cleaned out and they are nowhere near that dirty.

My home is spotless. But dust likes to collect in electronics. We have OLD hardwood floors here that are seperating so we get alot of dust creeping up nonstop. Plus it doesnt help that my cat is shedding..

Dude, you could have burned your house down!
I had a PC that caught fire once, just because of to much dust, now I clean it out at least twice a year!

The case itself was lined in dust bunnises held together with cat hair. the heatsinks were filled with hardened dust. I have a very high rpm fan on that sucker so it compacts dust like a vice

Cats in the house will WRECK your 'puter's guts faster than you can say "cat." Computers are super-magnets for cat hair and all that goes with it.

For some reason my IDE cables have been dropping like flies lately, and every time I open the case, I'm appalled at the level of icky nastiness that's accumulated inside the case. This is, like, every two months at most. Eek.

Another reason why I love my Antec 1080B case. The front chassis has an air filter, I recommend you get this case.

Holy shit, that's fucking dirty.

My new computer has a big window on the side so I can see when it needs to be cleaned now.

I've got an old Pentium 100 that has never been cleaned and I don't think it is anywhere near that dirty.

Iwant: Thanks for the heads-up dude. I'm gonna be more careful about cleaning my machine now. Thanks for snapping the pics too. An honest to goodness public service message with pics and everything. You didn't have to do that. Appreciate it.

I was having some issues about a week or so ago.

It was all heat related. I checked my temp and was running at about 71c.

I did a bit of research on the net and learned that the fan shipped with the amd athlon is a piece of shit, can't handle the job.

Went out and bought the best fan they had at Frye's don't remember the name tossed the box...anyway runs $29.95...my puter has been running 41c with a full load

Yup, ks75a rev3.1. Their most "solid" board. Unfortunately I abused it beyond what people would even dare put their 400 dollar boards through.

Last summer, crappy heatsink. PS7, UT, UT2K3, outlook, at least 12 porn browsers, winamp runnign 24/7 with a dsp pluggin that loves eating up soundcard's bandwidth all running at same time. I'd just pause a game and alt-tab around. Overclocked to 284mhz on cpu and ram bus. AT that time I only had 256 mb sdram... so page file was hit every 5 seconds. Also have powermenu's transparencies runnign 24/7. Not to mention 17 IRC channels open with 15,000 lines of text buffered in main memory per channel.

Then my power supply blew up. Literaly! that little POS generic 250w couldnt cut it anymore. So I had to get myself a beafy 300w with MAJOR TOC wattage and sperate filters on each chain.

SO moral of story is. it can take a licking, just give it a beafy power supply and lots of cool air and it will last like the big boys. Stupid me,,,, I let it get cancer in the fans.

Now THAT is abuse. Oh yeah. Only rebooted every month or two.
