But you're wrong about the difference. The real difference, the one that really matters, is that a machine gun can fire 300+ rounds per minute. A semi auto can do nowhere near that.
Anyways, based on your lack of ability and/or willingness to properly differentiate if you you say you drive a sportscar I will assume it is really a Yugo.

I guess the number of guards would depend on the size of the school. Probably at least one guard per building.
I think an experienced guard with military or police training would be able to take out an untrained shooter pretty quickly. And yes they probably should have AR15's or similar. Handguns wouldn't be accurate enough.
