Police in Broward County responded to reports of an active shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school in Parkland, Fla., on Wednesday. According to local news reports, at least 20 people were injured. Police say the shooter is still at large. click here for the latest updates.

I'm tired of kids having to live in fear because we allow everyone and their mother to own firearms. Right now I'm watching live TV and I'm seeing hundreds of kids running from a school with their hands up in the air. Kids should NEVER have to go through this.
One time I was at my kid's school picking her up and she was walking through a grassy field when shots rang out. Ten seconds later the school went on lock down. Nothing puts the fear of god in you like your child being caught out in the open when an active shooter is firing off rounds. (Turns out it was a police shooting a block away from the school.)
When is our government going to do something about this?

I blame the easy access to high capacity weapons.. for that reason it is the NRA who is to blame because they lobby on behalf of the gun and ammo manufacturers who sell these weapons..
The NRA used to be a gun safety organization but now they are just a lobbyist for the gun manufacturers.

All of the high schools in my area have school resource officers. I have mixed feelings about them. They add extra security (as you say, security that, in a perfect world, shouldn't be needed) but it also makes a lot of the kids feel like they are constantly under the eye of the law. It's sad that we live in a time where kids needs to be under armed protection just to go to school.Comment

Even then, you still have an extreme disadvantage. The intruder has the element of surprise. Unless you are one of those people that have a shotgun loaded and in your hand, the chances of you getting to your gun cabinet and loading it, or even making it to the place you keep your loaded gun, are pretty small. I'll bet more people survive a home invasion because the intruder has them secured compared to those who try to go for a weapon. Not saying that a reason to not a own a gun.
