Aside from submiting them to the LL's and anywhere else that will accept them, and submitting them to the SE's ...

Do People trade links on these? Ive never seen it done, but sems like there wouldnt be much of a problem doing it, and it would make perfect sense to do it .... just wondering if anyone has any other good tips on how to promote a free site for SE rank?

Personally i dont think there is a whole lot more you can reasonably do other than what you said. First of all, there are millions of free sites out there already, odds of you getting any kind of high hits on major se is slim. And if there was an easy way everybody and their brother would be doing it and then it wouldnt work anyway. I think most important things are domain names and proper keyword structure. Make sure pics have descriptive alt tags etc. Only so much you can do without spending excessive time or risking getting banned.
Course if i knew different wouldnt say it out loud anyway.

Ok so basically your saying promote it just as i would a regular site going after SE hits.

Thats about what i would do anyhow, except normally i keep text to a bare minimum on free sites .... i mostly target banner sales off LL traffic.

I just booked an order for a good amount of free sites to be made, this time around i am going to add a significant amount of text, as well as strategic keyword placement and i might even start a link trade table.

The link trades are hard when nobody likes you though, lol .... ill do my best!

Also as you suggested i will name the files, images and alt tags with keywords in mind ... i wouldnt normally go that far on a free-site.

Well thanks so much for replying .... as soon as my order is done ill get to work on that.

Well, i was just sayin that you can only do so much within reason. Whether its worth doing even a certain amount though is a matter of opinion and depends on the nich and your strategies. You know everybody debates the quality versus quantity thing.... The only sure thing is that with free sites, going past a certain amount of effort will be a waste of time. But i do think most people underestimate the value of text, not just for seo but because it sells.
And stashi, stop being so fucking nice, for cynics like me its really irritating.

when it comes to the SEs, I think going farther is better, if you know how to get placed and how to get rankings, get them! no matter what it takes. targetted SE traffic is potent as fuck, and that's a fact. i got 520 se hits from yahoo alone to my latest freesite last week

When you trade links with other sites make sure the other site is a trusted one. As an example if it has hidden links and text links the same color as the background etc it will eventualy get banned by Google and that will pull down your PR.
