You'd be surprised. This is obviously a marketing tactic and one to build the overall community around a coin/token. When people hold it, even if only a small amount, they are more likely to care about the growth of the project and spread awareness among other things.

Back in 2013/2014 I did some of these on bitcointalk and acquired 30k DGB for free (among others) that was worth upwards of 4k before this recent blood bath.

I agree that many of them will not be worth anything -- however there are so many airdrops that I do believe some of them will over time.
