UK age checks will lead to kids going to the Dark Web

There is a webmaster here who advised the British government on how to implement age check legislation. Didn't he see this coming?

Warning that age-checks on porn sites risks pushing children to dark web

Quote:
Children could be pushed towards extreme pornography and criminal gangs by age-checks on adult websites, an impact assessment into Government plans has revealed.

From May people visiting explicit sites will have to prove they are 18 by completing age verification checks in a bid to protect children from harmful content.

But a report by officials has warned that the changes could have the opposite effect and instead push youngsters onto the dark web, a hiding-place for criminal gangs.

By webmaster, don't you mean MINDGEEK ? Aren't they the ones coming up with this AGEID thingy... And of course teens will still want to watch porn... I had my first porn mag at 9 years old (yes I started young) and certainly always had a porn mag under my bed after that... and yes I was pre internet age...

If I was a young teen now I am sure I'd be surfing porn one way or another...

I remember when I was a schoolboy in the 1980s classmates boasting about having watched one of their cousin's VHS tape of 'Animal Farm' (not the Orwell version, judging by their descriptions).

I'm also worried that as far as I can tell, these ID checks just apply to porn, not for example websites that show gore, car crash victims and ISIS beheadings and the like. So even without considerations of the dark web, quite soon, millions of young Mohammeds in the UK instead of surfing Pornhub and discovering how stupid Islamism is for wanting to deny even the sight of uncovered female flesh, they'll be going to gore sites for their forbidden adrenalin rush and getting a hardon watching infidels having their heads cut off (while concluding that radical Islam is in fact not so different to the fundamental British cultural values of Theresa May).

Only effective way to control that is to let parents to control by using software which can do that.
As you said , even in pre-internet era was quite easy to get it, and now is even easier thanks to VPN's and other anonymous techniques.
And they have already experience with bypassing torrent site blocks.

When are they going to tell us what this age verification thing will actually involve though?. Im trying to keep up with the info but not really much info to be had. Remember they blocked piratebay in the UK?. Proxy access to the site still hold the top 3 rankings when you type the name into google UK. Iv got a feeling the government will make money through this one way or another

This is my biggest issue with the whole thing, there is NO information coming out from either the regulator (The BBFC) or the UK Govt (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport) despite it being just a few months away.

No-one knows exactly what is allowed on a 'free area' of a website before being verified.
There are currently no approved AV systems.

I would encourage anyone to contact them asking for information:

[email protected]
[email protected]

I've now emailed both of them three times (and had auto replies back so they are getting my emails) but have heard nothing back from them.

This leads me to think:

A: They have no actual clue about what is going on and how it'll be enforced.
B: Mindgeek have taken full control and will run things shifting any possible blame away from the Govt/BBFC when hacking and privacy issues come into play (and they will!).
C: It won't come into force on the specified date.
D: They have bigger things such as Brexit to concentrate on.

This seems to be the glaringly obvious answer.

VPNs are becoming more well known and are frequently used to get around geographical content restrictions.

So why would kids decide TOR is the easiest solution to access restricted content from the UK? They're going to have a shitty experience trying to stream a video via TOR.

Internet laws made by people who have no idea about how Internet works.
