I might be buying a pizzeria...

Saturday I have a meeting with someone who is buying back his pizzeria, and he wants me to be a partner.

A local guy owns a few pizzeria and a few gas stations, and he sold the pizzeria down the street from me to his brother who promptly ran it into the ground. The original owner is buying it back and wants me involved....

    Sounds exciting.

      Nice!

You should come up with your own signature Pizza for the restaurant.

      Congrats and good luck!

He could call it Ate Up or Homeslice, fitting names with Rochard involved.

If the pizza is good, it's a good investment.

I think pizza delivery is dead and dying. I used to ear Domino’s every week. Now I can get anything I want delivered and pizza is a once every few months thing now.

Food delivery services and more places offering delivery are likely cutting into pizza sales, but pizza is still one of the most popular foods in the country. I live in a smallish suburb and in the last year we have had two new pizza places open up and both seem to be doing pretty well.

I don't think we will be seeing the demise of pizza anytime soon.

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Make sure you find out if he will want you to work at the place and if so how much. It might not be worth it if he expects you to be a small partner and put in full-time hours.

That's why i'm thinking things like this end up in disasterville. Get an iron-clad operating agreement.

The current "state of the industry," as it were, is not sustainable.

Last night I checked out Postmates because I also want pizza tonight and I cannot find delivery from any pizza place except the majors. For $10 a month you get unlimited deliveries with no fee, or you pay a $3.99 per trip delivery fee.

That is not sustainable. These IT companies with venture funding are "disrupting" markets with prices that they will not be able to maintain as soon as the investment money goes away.

My sincere hope is that these fluffed companies do not destroy the local companies that I love. If the local companies can hang on a few more years, they may make it. These upcoming years, until the bubble pops, are going to be very rough though.

Yeah. As exciting as when SleazyDream had gotten into a night club business (which Hells Angels burned to the ground, or something like this).

I won't be shocked at all to see some changes in how the industry operates. That said, I don't think pizza as a food is going anywhere and I think people having pizza delivered will still be around for a long time. How that pizza gets delivered may well change dramatically over time. I live in a place where Postmates and services like that aren't available yet, but it won't shock me if someone opens a smaller scale version of something like that locally in the future. Years from now my pizza may be delivered by some freelance delivery driver and not the pizza company, but I think I will still be able to get it.

Like you say, the worry is how these changes will affect the smaller companies. Companies like Amazon are buying up everything so I won't be surprised either if some years from now that freelance delivery driver brings me pizza, but my only choices are a few large corporate chains.

Hey Rochard take it form someone who has owned 12 restaurants in California, think hard about this. It's amazingly hard work if you are running it. Long hours and staff that come to work drunk or on drugs or just not turn up or steal from you, the list goes on. If you are successful its a great feeling but its a huge undertaking to get to that stage.

From our initial talks it is mostly a investment and management thing. I work full time, own a few other things; I do not have time to be working behind the counter. It's also a marketing thing - I am VERY well known in my town (people walk up to me and as if I am "THAT Richard Buss") so being involved with a local pizza place would be a big plus.

If you end up deciding to do it, I hope it is successful for you. I always thought it might be cool to own a fun pizza place.

I think it was 2007 that I went to Valparaiso, IN for goodgirl's birthday. I was paying for dinner for her entire family, so I was pretty happy when they wanted to go to the pizza place in downtown Valpo.

Mid-way thru dinner, we walked next door to pick up the cake I had ordered. As we walked back in the pizza place I notice a sign that says "cash only" - it was explained to me that it was a mob owned place.

It doesn't sound like Rochard is getting involved with delivery; I suspect Dash and Postmates might hit them up to deliver for them.

                                                          Good luck.

That is 100%. Nobody here even thought that it won't be delivered. The hint was simply that pizza delivery places lost a portion of business due to other food places jumping the delivery train. Not that delivery as a thing in general is at some kind of risk.

Think about the earning potential of 1 pizza shop and if you really want to spend your time doing that. If your goal is something to do because you're bored, while your passive investments make money... go for it. If you're trying to make a lot of money, stay away.

The hint was simply that pizza delivery places lost a portion of business due to other food places jumping the delivery train. Not that delivery as a thing in general is at some kind of risk.
I can see how expanding delivery to other types of food could cause people to buy less pizza. I'm not sure how much less as I think people who like pizza and eat it regularly still will, but I can see how someone with more options might opt for one of those from time to time as opposed to pizza. It makes sense.

I'm not sure how much less as I think people who like pizza and eat it regularly still will, but I can see how someone with more options might opt for one of those from time to time as opposed to pizza. It makes sense.

I live in a smallish suburb and in the last year we have had two new pizza places open up and both seem to be doing pretty well.

I don't think we will be seeing the demise of pizza anytime soon.
