BUSTED!! Apple confirms they slow down older iPhones

Apple has confirmed the suspicions of many iPhone owners by revealing it does deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age.

Many customers have long suspected that Apple slows down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade.

The company has now said it does slow down some models as they age, but only because the phones' battery performance diminishes over time.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

The practice was confirmed after a customer shared performance tests on Reddit, suggesting their iPhone 6S had slowed down considerably as it had aged but had suddenly sped up again after the battery had been replaced.

Apple only have your best interests at heart.

Its akin to a doctor telling an elderly person that they have to start taking it easy and relax more. Perfectly sensible and understandable thing to do.

Good for apple I say. Other companies simply just don't care as much

No, this is like a doctor forcing an elderly person to slow down by strapping him down on his bed, and the only way the doctor will release him again is when the elderly person gives the doctor money

You should read the full article that wehateporn posted above. Apple's reason for doing this makes sense.

As an Apple fanboy, what I would like to see Apple do is make the "smoothing out" feature an option instead of a requirement. I have older Apple ipads in my house for example that are always connected to AC. For these I don't care at all about battery life, just performance. It would be nice to see a "Highest Performance / Longer Batter Life" toggle in settings somewhere, so consumers could choose for themselves.

Apple wants to make money. Who doesn't? Anyway, what's the problem of buy a new one after one or two years of good use? You can sale it and buy a new one, no big deal.

No, it makes sense to disclose this information when you buy the product, or give you an option to throttle your product through the settings. This is nothing PR bullshit to save face. Do you think they would ever have admitted doing this if they didn't get caught MONTHS ago?

I'm not disagreeing with you. Of course it should be disclosed, but like most companies, they might disclose that in their TOS somewhere. What I said above was to make this a FEATURE in their OS that could be easily turned off if users wanted to.

They could be bullshitting, yes, but I wouldn't call this PR. They didn't make a big commercial or giant ad anywhere. This is just their response.

                              Maybe, maybe not.

My point is this. If the routine in their OS does what its supposed to do and extend battery life in older phones, then ok. But if the cost of this reduces performance, then users should have the ability to disable it. Am I wrong?

Many customers have long suspected that Apple slows down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade.

The company has now said it does slow down some models as they age, but only because the phones' battery performance diminishes over time.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

The practice was confirmed after a customer shared performance tests on Reddit, suggesting their iPhone 6S had slowed down considerably as it had aged but had suddenly sped up again after the battery had been replaced.
