I'm setting up a home network.. 2 computers, cable connection and hub. WinXP on both comps. The desktop works fine and connects to internet. I cant get the laptop to connect to the internet through the cable connection...

Any tips? and yes everything is plugged in correctly.

wall -> Cable Modem ---> cat5 ----> hub --> computers

correct?

If it's setup like that, and you cannot get a lease w/ the second box you connect.. Call the cable company and request a second IP. Most likely the problem.

Yes thats how its setup and no 2nd IP's are not allowed for residential customers. They told me to use a hub to get the internet on 2 computers though.

Ditch the hub and get a router (linksys for example)
If they told you to get a hub and you are trying to hook up two computers to it, and only have one ip, they are very wrong. It just won't work. You can't share one ip between computers with a hub.
