I think every post in this thread is trying for perfect grammar and spelling, or atrocious... No middle ground.

I find quite amusing that my grammar is better than most of the guys posting here. Especially since I can't even speak english.

I was married to a German gal for 14 years and her English spelling and grammar were nearly perfect. Certainly better than the average on this board.

Well, I am just the product of the public school system in United States and have the tendency to post stupid responses where I shouldn?t. It?s amusing to read some of topic lines at GFY and, in a post, seeing ?a lot ? spelled like this: alot especially in ?caps? always brings a smile to my face.

It is not so amusing to see ?grammar Nazi? in a topic line or in a post ?there must be more fellow Nazi's out there. How about some syntactic cleansing, people!?

While I do believe you were just making a fun thread and used the wrong choice of verbiage for your ?grammar policing?, you may have offended a few members of this board.

Before everyone else tells me to GFY, I already know.

sorry but I had to post this, mainly because college education was involved.

"Me wanted to be independent cost me my marriage... Got myself a bachelor degree in nursing and one year master (5 year studing) with 2 kids.... He fuken fliped on me... terring my books and stuff.. etc.. bal bla...

well I paked my bags and left with the kids... I am doing just fine... I liike to be in controle of my own life...and feel good about myself.. kinda lonely at times but hey! freedom is amazing..."

"It was a hard road before finishing my studies but wirth wild... And yes my X was spychologicly abusive controlative and manipulative man...For me freedom is not just time wize... Its about being myself, happy fufilled, selfestime and yes freedom to go and do as i please. And I do work hard to make sure the bills are paid and its hard to be there as much as my kids would love it... Funny thing when MOM is happy the kids as well.. WE sherish each moment we can so quality of time is important... Thanks for asking hun..."

CDSmith 04-26-2003 08:24 PM

"noone" is another stupid fuckup that a lot of people make. "noone" is actually TWO WORDS...... "no" and "one"... and should look thusly --- "no one"

You'd think it would cause a brain disruption for some people to just put a space in there.

I am profoundly amused by the fact that there is someone on this board more oversensitive than I am.

We know you can't speak English, you just showed it in the first sentence. :winkwink:

Babaganoosh 04-27-2003 05:15 AM

The grammar in some of the posts here is amusing, but what really get me going is the misuse of basic words.

I see things like this too frequently:

"Your an idiot"
"He kicked there dog"

Had I not known how to spell, I never would have gotten out of 3rd grade. I can't imagine an adult making these mistakes. Especially adults whose native language is English.

These make me crazy too:

"Just $99,99" - , and . are NOT interchangeable.
"He get's a lot of pussy" - "gets" is not possessive. Lay off the " ' ".

Well, um... Yes they are, sortof. In quite a few countries, they write (for example) ten thousand point zero "10.000,00" instead of "10,000.00" like we do in the US.

They are here in Brazil and it annoys the fuck out of me.

There, their and they're.

Your and you're.

My personal favorites and it annoys the fuck out me when people fuck that up too. Oh yeah to and too. :Graucho

I know a lot of countries do it, it's still not correct though.

That's my :2 cents:.

I count 5 errors. And English is not my native language.

DynaMite :2 cents:

Mutt 04-27-2003 07:01 AM

i don't think Ian is English, thought I once saw him say on here that he is a Yank going to school in England.

no doubt there are many illiterates in this biz, hell, all over the Internet you see people who can't spell or use anything close to proper grammar.

some of it is just laziness or cyber culture affectations, some people i suspect are just garden variety imbeciles.

i don't capitalize my sentences, i sometimes don't type complete sentences.

gothweb 04-27-2003 07:24 AM

I am an American, not English. Been in the UK for a few years, so my spelling/etc. is sortof a hybrid between US and UK variations.

Anyhow, there is a point to all of this grammar nazi stuff. I think it has an effect on business. Anyone else?

Well, I know I've had a few banners etc made that had misspelled words on them when I was shown an example. :1orglaugh

That's an example, certainly. Anyone who does work for you that includes writing needs to either know how to write correctly, or have a way to guarantee that the product doesn't make you look stupid. You don't pay a designer so you can proofread their work.

There is a lot more to this, though.

notice how in the majority of my posts, words are not capitalized. i know where they go, i just don't bother with them.

notice how i don't even capitalize "I".

That is because this is the age of Nintendo.

Once upon a time when i was a biz prof i used to set aside 10% of essay marks for grammar. I did it on the grounds that good English grammar is a must in the business world and the students might as well ge tused to it. THEY HATED IT, OF COURSE. Their grammar was almost universally appalling.

fnet 04-27-2003 12:25 PM

Grammar is significant, but at least I can intuit the intended meanings through word association.

This is the one thing I can't stand!!!!!!!!!!

Can you???????

OMFG!!!!!!

A few times, this diarrhetic overpunctuation has come via e-mail from this or that person I knew in real life. They get one warning.

What's most irritating about it is that it's intentional.

gothweb 04-27-2003 02:06 PM

I wonder if people realize that they lose a lot of credibility when they don't bother to post with tolerable grammar? There are a number of people on here who I never had a chance to respect, because they always come off as either 8 years old or russian. I bet I'm not the only one.

I feel the same way too. When someone doesn't type with close to correct grammar and they're not a foreigner, I lose their credibilty, and they lose their professionalism towards me.
