Uber is just the start. Eventually it will be cheaper to "rent" a car when you need it instead of having your own car. You just request a car and five minutes later you are on your way, no need to drive, no need to own, no need for oil changes, etc.

I was thinking this might expand cities again. The car made the suburbs. Then drunk driving laws etc forced us all to come to central locations close to home. Density became cool. Now you can sleep it off on the way home or catch-up on tv, reading etc. love)no hours away wont even be an issue.

amazed Volvo got the deal, tbh, I´d have expected Toyota or Mercedes, alas, Merc´s are probably too high in costs

I hope its a uber failure.. Self driving cars will put tens of thousands if not millions out of work so a few big wigs can make more profits..

I imagine this is a tidal wave that won't be held back. Self-driving cars will destroy driving jobs just like robots and other forms of automation will destroy manufacturing and manual labor jobs.

I have a feeling the future will be one where there simply aren't enough jobs for all the people who want one and we could have a massive segment of the population permanently unemployed.

Just wait until they are hacked and every self driving car in the world makes a hard right at the same time.

They said this about computers too. They said that offices will be filled full of computers, and there will be no need for people. Well they were wrong.

We are getting closer, however. With AI.... Pretty soon we won't need cab drivers or truck drivers. We won't need garbage men; This will be automated too. With less drivers on the road we'll need less police officers on the freeways, no more gas stations....

Eventually we will go to Universal Income.

I agree. They have been saying things like this my whole life, but the difference is the advances we made before all created large new sections of industry or at least comparable jobs, for example, a person who was working in a warehouse that distributed books now might work in an Amazon warehouse. The creations were meant to make our lives easier and more efficient. Automation/robotics/AI is all designed to remove humans from the equation. It's not going to happen tomorrow or next year, maybe not even in our lifetimes, but I don't think we are too far off from a situation where a basic Universal Income of some sort will be put in place.

I hope it's a failure as well. Countdown to someone hacks the shit and drives cars into people/buildings etc...

Not a fan of electric cars or self driving cars. Gas powered, open road with some tunes=freedom

Regarding truck drivers, so many deliveries are direct to customer, oversized loads, specialized freight etc... where auto pilot doesn't really work as the customer doesn't wanna do any work to get their shit off the truck combined with being scary as hell having that kind of weight on auto pilot, few thousand pounds runs into something not so bad, 50,000+ pounds another story

AI is the difference. I had an issue with Amazon today (they tried to charge me $50 for some "credit card security" bullshit) and I had to speak to a person - in a chat box. It worked, but eventually.... Jobs like that will be completely phased out. AI will be able to do that.

This will start to happen in our lifetime.

At its core, yes. I think, eventually, there will not be enough jobs for everyone so we will have to find some way for those without a job to live. There are some places experimenting with it now, but I think we are still a ways off from it being a regular thing.

I had an issue with Amazon today (they tried to charge me $50 for some "credit card security" bullshit) and I had to speak to a person - in a chat box. It worked, but eventually.... Jobs like that will be completely phased out. AI will be able to do that.

This will start to happen in our lifetime.

But i see one field which definitely need AI - politics . No matter which country, politicians are corrupted everywhere or oriented to specific group of people only instead all. AI would not be biased.

I've only been in an Uber twice as I use them to bring bitches to me instead of personal use like a cheap limo for whores that don't deserve a limo and both drivers were cool. If I ever ordered an Uber and nobody was driving fuck no I ain't getting in and if it charged me a cancellation fee I'd smash the windshield.
