Listen to this, read it several times.

If you blow $2,000 on non targeted traffic, you'll become one of those guys who say ad networks are just out to take your money and there's no profit in media buying.

Do some data analysis on your current traffic, see what converts, find some patterns on browser/os mix that makes you the most bang for your buck and start there. Slowly open it up as you start to see break even/small returns. Test test test. Split test landers, banners, optimize landers, banners. $2k isn't a lot of money to do all of what I just said but if you DON'T do any of what I just said, you may as well just give your $2k to charity and come to the same conclusion that "Paid traffic doesn't work" because that is what will happen if you buy un targeted traffic.

Standard membership sites are extremely hard to turn a profit on bought traffic unless you are buying niche targeted traffic or unless you have an extremely aggressive offer with cross sales, upsells, etc.

Invest in SEO and link building and continue to get traffic from that instead of spending money once without results.

If you really want to spend money on paid advertising just take your membership site to a CPA network and give them a budget. Let the affiliates who know what they are doing assume the risk and just adjust your payout per signup to where you know it's within your profit model. This is very scalable and you don't have to learn a thing about paid traffic (which is a lot)

Unless it's something very special, no affiliate on a cpa network is going to run it.

Do this:

Go to Ero Advertising and create an account.

Get familiar with their interface, and then contact someone in support and ask to speak to a rep. Or even better, ask for Jan.

Show them the website you want to promote, and ask them to create a campaign for you. All you will need to do is provide them with banners.

Once its done, fund your account with a hundred dollars or so and test the advertising out slowly. If you can do A/B testing thats even better. Install their pixel tracking code on your purchase confirmation pages so they can see what ads work for you and which ads do not.

Doing it this way won't take long, and will give you valuable insight and to what converts and what doesn't. More importantly you will have a human being helping you with this, who has a real interest in making sure that the ad campaigns are working for you.
