I don't think they were ever banned. Racial slurs are definitely grounds for banning so quite often a "Guess the Race" thread would result in a ban but not because it was a "guess the race" thread.

Best way to find out would be for you to do some a/b testing.

First do up a couple of Guess The Race threads that do not include any racial slurs or anything that could be construed that way and see if you get banned.

If you do then you have your answer.

If not, then do up a couple of Guess the Race threads with a definitive racial slur included in your narrative and then see if that gets you banned.

Scientific method is always the best way to figure this stuff out.

Guess the race threads that were frowned upon by admin did not have any racial slurs or anything close to that at all. It was just "guess the race" phrase that was a problem to admins.
