Gender dysphoria IS a mental illness. That doesn't make the person suffering a bad person. "Treatments" like hormones and surgery are to dull the symptoms brought on by the condition (much like painkillers, they mask the symptoms but don't fix the source of the pain.) but deep down they know that it's just a surface fix. This is probably a big factor in suicide rates.
People suffer from gender dysphoria. It can't be an easy thing to live with and the people that do put up with a lot. Even though people can be trans and seem well together and productive members of society doesn't mean it isn't a mental illness. Depression is a mental illness, people get through it.

I've got nothing against trans people live and let live and all that and I hope they find happiness in life, I really do, but the truth is until we can fix the source of the problem I think suicide rates will remain sky high. And that's what's sad.

People with depression are also normal people in society. You obviously don't get it and probably won't. Gender dysphoria IS a mental illness. As I said it doesn't make trans people bad and they shouldn't be treated badly because of it but it's still an illness. That's why they feel terrible about the gender they were born with the illness causes it. All the options available to take (hormones, operations and the like)are to TREAT the SYMPTOMS caused by the illness. Much like taking anti depressants to treat depression, even after taking the meds and masking the symptoms there is still a root cause of the depression. The more people that can see it for what it is the easier it is for people to make things better for trans people.

a guy may undergo surgery to become a woman and from that claim to be a woman, but their chromosomes are still that of a male so In science terms they would still be considered a male.
