I live in a small border town in Texas. Food banks are available, but only on certain days of the week and you have to apply and get approved. I am not sure about the church.

Couple of friends and I found ourselves homeless when we were about 15, figured out real fast good food is thrown away at most all restaurants. Today i could not imagine eating from a bin but when times are tough, no problem. Never once did we ask for anything. Good luck OP
