Business Will Mining CryptoCurrency on Porn Tube Sites be the Way of the Future?

Will Mining CryptoCurrency on Porn Tube Sites be the Way of the Future?

Let’s face it, today’s internet users are adept at ignoring ads of any kind on websites. Adblock and other ad blockers which can even block annoying YouTube video ads are gaining popularity. Naturally, because of this, ad revenues are lost, leaving web publishers without recourse.

A couple weeks ago, The Pirate Bay began using an in-browser cryptocurrency miner which uses JavaScript running in the background, unbeknownst to the user. Many users said they prefer mining in the background rather than viewing ads which can often lead to websites containing viruses, malware and even ransomware.

This past weekend, Showtime websites were found to be running a similar script, as pointed out by users on Twitter. The sites included showtime.com and showtimeanytime.com

Is this a sign of things to come?

A new WordPress plugin, WP Monero Miner using Coin Hive (which performs the aforementioned in-browser crypto mining) was released just last week and now boasts over 200 active installs on WordPress sites.

    According to the plugin author:

In version 1.0.0 you need to add the widget “Monero Miner using Coin Hive” to your sidebar. This puts a control panel on your site where each visitor can decide to donate his computing power to you. As of version 1.1 the plugin features a “silent” option which works without the widget.
Are you thinking about getting in on the action and mining Monero without setting up complex crypto mining rigs? Okay sure, but you’ll need some traffic. A lot of traffic.
There is no easier way to get droves of web traffic more quickly than with free porn content. But this comes with a price.

Compared to mainstream advertising, adult websites command only a fraction of the CPM ad rates to those of their mainstream counterparts. The proliferation of free porn has further increased this problem. Perhaps crowdsourced crypto mining powered by porn viewers can soften the blow felt by adult sites.

How much traffic can a free porn site generate? Pornhub, the most popular adult website, receives 75 million visitors per day with the average “session” lasting over 10 minutes.

So how can you go about getting traffic cheaply and quickly? Well, look no further. The Tube Ace for WordPresss plugin allows you to import millions of porn videos from Pornhub, RedTube, Tube8 and YouPorn to your very own porn site(s) which run on auto-pilot. The videos are embedded just like YouTube videos, therefore you don’t have to worry about an expensive web hosting bill.

Sure, it may not be so easy to create a site that attracts millions of daily users like Pornhub right away. Luckily, you have something on your side. The power of scale. Tube Ace has multiple site licenses available at great discount, allowing you to create dozens of porn video websites, quickly and affordably.

    According to the Coinhive website:

Implementing a reward system for your site or game where users have to keep mining for longer durations is far more feasible. With just 10–20 active miners on your site, you can expect a monthly revenue of about 0.3 XMR (~$29).

If you run a streaming video site, a community site, an online game or anything else where you can give your users an incentive to run the miner for longer durations, then by all means: try it.

Let’s run some quick math. If each site of yours makes an average of only $300 per month, then having 10 websites will make you $3000 per month.

You may be wondering how difficult it is to get traffic to your new adult sites. I can tell you that getting porn traffic from Google and other search engines is quite easy, even without doing any SEO, link building, paid advertising or marketing. In the past, I have created new sites using WordPress and Tube Ace, imported 50,000 videos in a few days and received 10,000 daily users from search engines alone, without any advertising or marketing.

The ways in which cryptocurrencies will change our lives and disrupt industries remains to be seen, but we can be certain they shall occur.

Throughout history, pornography has aided mass adoption of many new technologies.

Porn standardized Super 8 film since it was cheap and easy to use since way back in the 1950s, declared VHS the winner versus Sony’s Betamax in the 1970s, created the need for e-commerce billing systems, pushed internet video streaming to what it is today. Many predict that Virtual Reality sales will see a huge boost mainly due to porn content available on VR devices. Why should cryptocurrencies be any different?

Its an interesting thought but the basic questions aren't really answered. Is it 20-30 visitors a day? Does it slow down the site or make streaming slower if its running in the background? Has anyone (preferably someone with a bigger site) tried this? I'm interested and have about 2M visitors monthly but i'd hate to "scare them off"

To me, an industry where Tubes can't afford to run full-length videos or 10-minute clips can only be a good thing. Should the advertising revenue drop so much they can't afford anything more than a 3-minute clip. That would mean people would have to buy or revert to piracy which again relies on advertising.

I've been using coinhive for a day and I like it. The sites aren't slow and it runs smoothly. However, I was researching about it, and i believe the script may be labeled as browser hijacking and could be counter productive if so.

                                  Two major problems:

                                  1. Mining via javascript is incredibly inefficient. You're using a sledgehammer to pulverize a peanut. I find it incredibly arrogant to deliberately use someone else's computing resources for your own profits.

                                  2. Ad blockers can easily block this.

I thought about testing this on my sites, but I did some math, and....tell me if this sounds wrong:

On my shitty laptop if I give it 1 unthrottled thread it does 10 hashes per second. So I'm gonna generously assume an average of 10 hashes per second per user, because I'm gonna have to throttle the miner back to like 20-30% CPU, but some people are gonna be on beefy desktops that can mine way faster than my laptop. (Realistically I think it will be less than 10 hashes per second per user.)

Now, my average session is about 8 minutes. Let's pretend I have 100k sessions per day. Then that's 800,000 minutes, or 48,000,000 seconds of mining time time. 10 hashes a second gets us 480,000,000 hashes per day.

Coin-hive payout is 0.00014238 XMR per 1m hashes, so thats 0.0683424 XMR per day. XMR is currently $99 usd, so that leaves us with $6.76 per 100k daily engaged users. And that's assuming more hashes per user than I think is realistic.

Personally? I'll stick with banner ads and skimmed traffic.

revenue from mining isnt that much

If Coinhive pays out 0.00015 XMR per million hashes, TPB would get 127.5 XMR per month, which is roughly $12,000 at the moment
12k per month isnt going to cover hosting expenses., they are better with ads.

Another issue with cryptocurrency is that its value can be incredibly volatile. With ads you'll probably see a steadily declining but consistent revenue; with cryptocurrency it could be up 50% one month, down 400% the next.

This industry really needs to push the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. It should be easy to accept crypto payments. Cut out the middle man. Think of the hoops you are required to jump through to process VISA/MC. I can't even use Stripe to process CC payments for Tube Ace which is a WordPress Plugin and not porn content.

                                                Really good discussion.
In France, some soccer streaming website use CoinFive, but Avast block it and a lot of computer crash.

Some guys speak about the high profitability of BTC, but for me the best thing is to have money with ads to buy BTC.

The only good solution will be a disclaimer with "Choose ADS or MINING" and let the consumer decide...

In theory it's an excellent alternative monetization opportunity, but as it is right now, the earning potential is pocket change...

With only 21 million Bitcoins what's the point? Once they are all mined it's over. And the other crypto currencies don't have much traction.

                                                      1. Each of those 21 million (max) Bitcoins is worth a fair bit more now than it was this time last year. Something like a factor of 40. So the absolute amount in circulation isn't really relevant.

                                                      2. Miners get paid transaction fees as well as block rewards.

                                                          Great thread!
This in some ways reminds me of the SETI at home project that started around 1999 in which home computer users can "donate" part of their computing power to look for extraterrestrial radio signals.

Question is, how do I cash out the bitcoins from Monero into USD?
