False pretenses

This is a topic I've been experimenting with a bit over the past few weeks and seem to have come up with a plan that works for me.

Before reading on - please remember I'm in Colorado. We may have legal marijuana, but we have very little in the way of production. No agencies that handle adult models like SoCal, not a selection of studio or shoot houses available, etc. Adult work, even tame nudies like mine, is just not very popular out here.

1- Craigslist has not proven to be a good source when advertising openly for nude models. There are very few girls that have any photogenic value checking in there, and the ads are a pain in the butt because they can get flagged (deleted) very quickly, then you have to wait 2 days to post again (unless you have multiple verified accounts).

Never had good luck there but I will tell you one thing. The shorter the ad and the more "amateur" you sound, the more replies you get. Example: I post saying its for my site, using a good picture of a great model, and offering $200 an hour I get some replies. But, if I post some amateur style photo and offer less I get more replies. Not better replies, just more.

My ads always say I'm looking for girls to pose nude. There is the option of doing what I'll call "filtering" but others may call "upselling".

Just a few weeks ago I posted an ad looking for:

"Cute female that can snowboard for a shoot to be done ASAP (before A-Basin closes last runs). Need awesome smile, cute shape, decent snowboard skills and able to work in bikini top and with no top on."

(topless snowboarding). The ad got 17 replies in 24 hours, then I took it down. Of the 17 replies, 8 fit my goal of age 18-22 with no tattoos. I emailed each of them and explained I had what I needed for the snowboarding shoot, but would be doing a full nude shoot soon for TrueBabes that pays more. If interested, go visit this site and apply.

Of those 8 I was interested in 3 went over and applied to pose nude for TrueBabes. Later we discover one did have tats, so I was left with 2 decent applicants. Only one is shooting as the other is moving to Arizona and I couldn't get her in quick enough.

No, I can't explain why these same girls never responded to an ad looking for nudies, but did for topless snowboarding. It worked - but doesn't mean I know why.

On Craigslist about 25% of your replies will be the same girls over and over again. Another 25% will be males, usually other photographers or just "guys with cameras", pretending to be a girl and playing a game to see what you are up to.

Part 2 in a minute...

2- Google Search. Yes, if you are willing to spend money, Google with bring lots of model applicants your way - as long as you apply "filtering".

Google will not always take ads for nude models, and the website listed in the ad can't be asking for nude models or displaying nude models.

The solution for me is to grab some model or studio sounding domains and build simple sites on them looking for "models" or "bikini models". I use stock photos purchased at iStock or https://www.shutterstock.com/ because I don't have a bunch of fashion model shots around that are up to date.

Next, create campaigns and ads in Google Adwords. There are 3 common styles. TEXT that show in search results (more you bid, closer to the top). TEXT that show in search and on some sites related to the keywords you select. DISPLAY (aka display network) that are banners.

They work, and you can limit ads to geographical regions. I'm in Colorado, so I put in my Zip Code and say "within 250 miles" and they do what they can to limit the ads for that range.

The DISPLAY ads can be targeted, if you are willing to pay $1.50-$2.00 per click, directly to modeling sites.

All Google ads must be approved, as does the destination website. I've created 4 campaigns. 2 target "Modeling" in general and 2 target "Bikini Modeling". Each campaign sends traffic to a different website.

General Results:

A- "Bikini Modeling" brings applicants that are younger and slimmer.

B- Shorter websites with just 3 sample photos and minimal text bring more completed applications.

C- Longer websites, with more sample images and informative text bring less applicants.

D- Websites with a "Contact Us" page that shows a real company name they can Google, real address and real phone number (office landline, not cell) bring more interest, and some of it is by phone. Simply put - they call and say things like "I just wanted to see if this is a legit place".

This past weekend I turned on two campaigns, but only for about 10 hours each. This is one.



This is the Bikini Models campaign using 5 different ads (banners). Shown 62,605 times and only 95 clicks. The 95 clicks resulted in 8 applicants yesterday.

The websites use a simple form and send the application to my email account. I use Thunderbird to get my email and here is a screencapture of the inbox.



2 random applicants in the 6 days prior to turning the ad campaign on, and 8 applicants in the 12 hours it was on (5pm Sunday to 5am Monday).

Of course, they are not all great. Within that 8, one was 50 years old, one was 33 years old, then the rest 18-24. However, two are super cute candidates.

The issue now is, of course, that they applied for "Bikini Modeling". The next step will be to chill a few days, then email with information about my site, the soft nude work, the better pay compared to bikini modeling, and more and hope 1-2 are interested (and hope of course it is the two cutest).

Running the campaign a full weekend, cost of maybe $400, would bring much larger numbers. This is all just an experiment at this stage.

Just takes a time investment to build the sites and create campaigns, a few dollars for the banners, and cash for the Adwords traffic.

3- Facebook. Pretty much everything I just said about Google can also be done on Facebook's advertising system, but it is not always better. NOTE - Facebook owns Instagram, so same ad account can be used on both.

+1 Facebook has demographic information on members, so you can limit ads by states, even city. And, importantly by age range and sex. Yes, target ads to be shown in the news feed of females 18-22 in Kansas if you wish.

-1 Facebook costs more per click but may be worth it due to use of the demographic targeting.

-1 Facebook is more selective about images used in ads.

-1 Facebook "feels" to me to be a bit of a social justice company. I mean, ad text and destination websites approved by Google are often turned down by Facebook staff for odd reasons. Once was told "bikini photos are not allowed on Facebook!" by somebody in their approval department. Just sort of feels they want to run peoples lives or something.

-1 Speaking of "social" - you must be aware that Facebook ads in the mobile news feed (best place because every female 18-25 only uses mobile) can be commented on and complained about. So, as soon as some "Social Justice" girl sees it and starts commenting about it being racist because it has a white model not black, or skinny girl not thick, blah, blah, blah... you have to either delete the comments (which brings more nasty comments) or delete the entire ad and start over.

This last reason, the "social justice" due to commenting below news feed ads, is why I gave up on Facebook. Prior to 2015 it was well worth the investment. Now, not worth the hassle of watching your own ads all day for negative comments and social justice attacks.

4- Instagram by search and keywords. One thing that worked good for me was to set-up an entirely separate Social Media network for model searching.

Buy a cheap LG smart phone for about $45 at Walmart and get the TracFone 90 days plan. Includes a good number separate from anything else you have. Text, minutes and web in smaller amounts for $20 for 90 days. Don't use WiFi because you don't want home/office IP to show during registration process at some sites.

Use the phone to verify a Craigslist account, Twitter, Instagram.

Prepare a website to send girls to.

Prepare an Instagram account with nice (non-nude) photos, and a link to the website.

Don't go crazy buying traffic / followers / likes. Just a few to keep Instagram from banning account.

Now, you or somebody you hire, slowly start to follow girls you wish would come model for you. Don't message or ask, just follow for now. Find them by searching things they may have as locations or keywords. In my case "University of Colorado" or some sorority name or some music venue, then when you find a hot girl, dig deeper! That means, don't just click to follow her - dig into the "suggestions" that come up after you send a follow request for other cute girls related to her, etc.

Once your account on IG is up and running and verified, with its own email address and phone, you can use a computer to do the searching. On Windows 10 the Instagram App works for this, on Mac I use Flume or InstaMaster.

This is slow, but you are following girls in your area, that you already know are cute, and hoping they click back to your profile on IG and get interested. These would be girls that aren't on other sites, and in the back of the head they think "Hum, this photographer wouldn't have followed me if he wasn't interested in me". That assumes, of course, that you have a great batch of images to show you are good. If your IG profile looks amateur its not likely to draw any hot girls.

Like with Craigslist, Google, Facebook - the key is to have a mobile friendly website they can click over to and get some basic information.


There are other methods, and a lot depends on the style of girl you are looking for. In my case this stuff works to varying degrees.

A lot of flakes and tire kickers on there. I wouldn't devote much time to MM unless you enjoy dealing with wannabes and no-shows.

For anyone shooting content, the key is finding new girls or girls to pose. Unless you're operating at the top of the quality scale it's key to getting work done.

So anyone sharing their advice is asking for trouble. They might as well cut their own throats. Because the fewer people doing the same successful method will lessen their chance of finding girls.

But you might get some results if you contact other photographers and offer to pay an introduction fee. Money will always get a result.
