WikiLeaks says CIA disguised hacking as Russian activity

Latest WikiLeaks release shows how the CIA uses computer code to hide the origins of its hacking attacks and 'disguise them as Russian or Chinese activity'

    - WikiLeaks published 676 source code files today which it claimed are from CIA

    - It says the CIA disguised its own hacking attacks to make it appear those responsible were Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean

WikiLeaks has published hundreds more files today which it claims show the CIA went to great lengths to disguise its own hacking attacks and point the finger at Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.

The 676 files released today are part of WikiLeaks' Vault 7 tranche of files and they claim to give an insight into the CIA's Marble software, which can forensically disguise viruses, trojans and hacking attacks.

WikiLeaks says the source code suggests Marble has test examples in Chinese, Russian, Korean, Arabic and Farsi (the Iranian language).

It says: 'This would permit a forensic attribution double game, for example by pretending that the spoken language of the malware creator was not American English, but Chinese.'

This could lead forensic investigators into wrongly concluding that CIA hacks were carried out by the Kremlin, the Chinese government, Iran, North Korea or Arabic-speaking terror groups such as ISIS.

WikiLeaks, whose founder Julian Assange remains holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, said Vault 7 was the most comprehensive release of US spying files ever made public.

Unfortunately he isn't smart enough to put out some leaks on Russian intelligence as well to mask that he is the one behind it all... oops...

quite old, but these morons from KGB didnt change that much since years. Their main purpose was always: divide allies, stir up mess, disinformate, plant confusion, spread lies and semi-lies...
if caught, they usually avoid direct answers and just answer the questions with other questions

I spot already one Russian troll here on this forum.... Its even more sad if he is not troll, but just brainwashed "normal" Russian, fed by russian state TV.

actually, this article is really well written and balanced, I recommend reading it
Russian Active Measures and Influence Campaigns - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
                Also, one quote from it:
Since Russia cannot compete toe-to-toe with the West, its leaders have embraced a wide range of tools—information warfare in all its forms, including subversion, deception, dis- and mis-information, intimidation, espionage, economic tools, including sanctions, bribery, selective favorable trading regimes, influence campaigns, etc. This toolkit has deep historical roots in the Soviet era and performs the function of the equalizer that in the eyes of the Kremlin is intended to make up for Russia’s weakness vis a vis the West.

                another quote:

Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election is likely to be seen by the Kremlin as a major success regardless of whether its initial goal was to help advance the Trump candidacy. The payoff includes, but is not limited to a major political disruption in the United States, which has been distracted from many strategic pursuits; the standing of the United States and its leadership in the world have been damaged; it has become a common theme in the narrative of many leading commentators that from the pillar of stability of the international liberal order the United States has been transformed into its biggest source of instability; U.S. commitments to key allies in Europe and Asia have been questioned on both sides of the Atlantic and the Pacific. And last, but not least, the Kremlin has demonstrated what it can do to the world’s sole remaining global superpower.

and another quote, makes me sad about all these brainwashed Russians, typical fucking crooked government raping its nation to get more power:
Whereas there are some voices inside Russia who, like the leading anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, have challenged the many domestic failings and authoritarian leanings of the Putin government, there are hardly any who have challenged its foreign policy record. Worse yet, the Kremlin propaganda has been apparently so effective, and the legal constraints imposed by it so severe, that few Russian opposition voices dare to challenge the government’s foreign policy course for fear of being branded as foreign agents, enemies of the people, and fifth columnists.
it of course works the other way too - ie: "Snowden is a traitor and Russian spy, we should hang him etc."

I had a read but I didn't see any clear evidence. Whereas we know that Breitbart, Infowars, Rupert Murdoch (Fox News) are all Israel/Zionist, and we know that WikiLeaks is very kind to Israel. If Assange was working for Russia, it seems unlikely he'd be allowed to survive in London

I always trust everything Wikileaks says. I mean, just because they are involved in hacking and stealing classified data isn't important to me at all.

Come to think of it... I am stunned they are allowed to continue. I am really surprised the CIA hasn't taken them out yet.

Meanwhile never a major leak from Russia on wikileaks.. Not even the Panama Papers were published on wikileaks.. Not to mention, Julian Assange gets paid by RT where he has his own show the news mouth piece of the Kremlin. Not exactly in a position he can be taken serious or unbiased.

Sorry, but wikileaks doesn't count for much anymore.. They have clearly chosen to be biased and can't be trusted to be honest. Assange has ruined any chance for them to ever be taken serious again.. It's a shame because I supported the idea behind wiki leaks but they have been corrupted or who knows maybe they are were corrupt..

Oh but I do. They don't leak Russian intelligence at all. Only western nations that Russia is at odds with. That is only circumstantial evidence of course but that is more than enough to make it painfully obvious. Unlike the endless bullshit you try to pull off here on a weekly basis that are backed by some random psycho who makes a youtube video.

quite old, but these morons from KGB didnt change that much since years. Their main purpose was always: divide allies, stir up mess, disinformate, plant confusion, spread lies and semi-lies...
if caught, they usually avoid direct answers and just answer the questions with other questions

I spot already one Russian troll here on this forum.... Its even more sad if he is not troll, but just brainwashed "normal" Russian, fed by russian state TV.

                                      also, to resume:
Russian Active Measures and Influence Campaigns - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Yes, dated for a reason. When assange was a hunted man and ran to Russia with his tail between his legs for refuge it came at a price.. the price was Putin got to use wikileaks as a cover for his own intelligence agency any time he feels like it. Maybe if he didn't use it in such an obvious way it would actually be more effective but he seems to be a bit dim with these regards--which is a bit surprising honestly.

Snowden was the rare oddity that fell into wikileaks lap, just like Manning was, but being actual leaks with lots of dirt. I don't think Russia or anyone else was behind Snowden's leak. Wikileaks & Russia benefited from it by happenstance because what's bad for the US is good for Russia.

Snowden basically took the only action he could, which was to hide in Russia because he's smart enough to know that Putin would not turn him over to the US because he's a bit of embarrassment to the US having him there.

My guess is Snowden is very relieved that all this Russia hacking came out and Trump is mixed up in it. If Putin/Trump would of ended up with a good relationship it's very obvious Snowden would have been handed over..

:-) I dont remember Assagne coming to Russia.
                                            If you meant Snowden, well...
Snowden is a true idealist, that did what he do the best. And at least one country had balls to give him asylum...
Yet, the same country uses him for his own propaganda purposes...Which of course doesnt undermine at all the FACTS that Snowden leaked.
And yeah, only narrow minded people will attach these facts to only US govermnent...All power greedy bastards are the same worldwide everywhere.
The links that I posted about KGB's methods on disinformation - while used by Russia recently on large scale to stir things up - are nothing new...and yeah, Snowden docs confirm them also being used by Five Eyes...
not sure why would you even confuse Assagne with Snowden....
unless you meant Ecuador as Russia's ally that offered him room in embassy ?

Not to mention, that the biggest leak in recent history that had connections to Russia was the Panama Papers and wikileaks did nothing to help with that and also did everything possible to discredit the journalist working on it..

                                                        Good for Putin.

WikiLeaks is a weapon for Putin.

Putin used WkikiLeaks today as a weapon to discredit the agencies that are cornering Putin's pet for collusion with the enemy.

Putin has good from WikiLeaks, nobody else. WikiLeaks can't be trusted anymore it's shelf life expired after Putin weaponized it.

That is entirely possible; Mossad is outright scary. But the CIA has nearly unlimited resources. Just as an example, the only budget info I can find for the CIA is $27 billion in 1998. It seems the entire budget for the country of Israel in 2015 was $108 billion.

But when Mossad goes to war, they never stop.

By the fact it made the US look bad with all the spying. It was a shit storm and lots of tools got taken away from the NSA.. I'm sure they have most back by now but up till that point we could always claim Russia and China were hacking spying more than the US did..

Obviously anyone with a brain understands every major country was doing this but it was the 1st time it had been outright proven the US was doing it.

Our guys were always very good keeping this stuff quiet and out of the limelight. I mean for fucks sake we stole your Sputnik satellite for 12hrs in Russia during the cold war and you guys never knew until it was declassified like 30 years later.

BUDAPEST, Hungary - (AP) -- Pressure is growing on the Hungarian government to withdraw a draft bill on higher education that could lead to the closure of the Central European University in Budapest, which was founded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

The U.S. State Department as well as dozens of academics in Hungary and abroad on Friday called on Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government to ensure the CEU's independence and operations.

Orban said Friday on state radio that the CEU was "cheating" because it did not have a campus in its country of origin and because it issued diplomas recognized both in Hungary and the United States, giving it an undue advantage over local institutions. The CEU is accredited in New York state but does not have a U.S. campus.

"This is not fair to Hungarian universities," Orban said. "There is competition among universities and it is inexplicable why we should put our own universities at a disadvantage ... while securing an unfair advantage for the foreign university."

Fourteen winners of the Nobel Prize in economics were among some 150 academics from U.S. and European universities who advocated for the CEU in an open letter addressed to education officials and Reka Szemerkenyi, Hungary's ambassador in Washington.

"It would be a sad outcome for the training of students from the region, for academic research in Hungary, and for our own cooperation with Hungarian academics, if the proposed legislation came into force," the academics said.

Orban, however, conditioned CEU's survival to a bilateral Hungary-U.S. agreement on the university. He did not hide his disdain for the Hungarian-born Soros' policies supporting the university and numerous non-governmental organizations that Orban considers "foreign agents" working against Hungarian interests.

CEU rector Michael Ignatieff has vowed to keep the university open despite the draft bill, scheduled to be debated by lawmakers next week. The bill sets new conditions on foreign universities operating in Hungary and was seen as directly targeting the CEU.

Among the 28 foreign universities in Hungary, only CEU would fail to meet a requirement to also have a campus in its home country.

"Contrary to the prime minister's statement, there is no current Hungarian law that requires universities to have operations in their home countries in order to award degrees in Hungary," the CEU said. "We have been lawful partners in Hungarian higher education for 25 years and any statement to the contrary is false."

The CEU also said it was notified Friday by Hungary's education authority that its accreditation in New York state met the conditions for operating in Hungary.

The U.S. State Department also took exception to the proposed legislation, saying it would impose "new, targeted, and onerous regulatory requirements on foreign universities."

"If adopted, these changes would negatively affect or even lead to the closure" of the CEU, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. "We urge the government of Hungary to avoid taking any legislative action that would compromise CEU's operations or independence."

Hungarian university organizations also expressed their support for the CEU.

"CEU is a very significant scholarly center," said Laszlo Lovasz, president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. "It is good that it operates in Budapest."
