Suppose somebody would murder a winning US president candidate?

Would they give him the chair? Or just 18 years in prison?

The system in Holland is fucked up. You can get away with anything here. What a fucking joke.

With the exception of insane taxes, I would say Netherlands beats the USA in every category.

Only 18 years to kill a politico ? WAY BETTER!

It would almost get tempting wouldn't it. You'd even get nice meals and television in prison here, so why not!

Not to mention he'll be out after 2/3 of his sentence is filled.

11 years from now he is a free man.

                interesting constitutional question.

maybe experts in the us constitution could weigh on what the rules/precedents would be if a president elect dies between the time of election and his inauguration. What rules etc apply if he dies after the electoral college does its thing?

First of all, whether he was winning or not is something we will never know. I personally think the CDA would've been the biggest even if it hadn't happened.

Secondly, why should killing a politican be cause for a more severe punishment than killing a random person on the street?

Because killing politicians jeopardizes the democracy. They could have set an example, but they didn't.

No I think they should raise the punishment in general. Taking another person's life is the worst you can do.

I don't think people should be let out of jail if they might still pose a threat, to be honest.

However, indignation over someone getting a normal sentence for killing someone who happens to be very popular is something that pretty much pisses me off.
Just think about it, if Volkert van der G. had gotten a higher sentence than usual for murder, wouldn't that have implied that Pim Fortuyn was "worth more" than other people that have been murdered? Not exactly a nice signal to give to their families, imo.

Killing people in general jeopardizes the state we live in as well.
In both cases, if "everyone did it", or even if "it became common", the state would fall, democracy could not exist, and we could not have any type of order.

Besides that, someone that kills a politician out of ideals is, however wrong he may be, doing something he himself considers as good. Some asshole that just beats a guy to death in the street doesn't even have that excuse.
If Hitler came to power, and you had a chance to kill him before that happening, would you do it? Now, if someone you considered just as bad would come to power, would you still do it?
That's what Volkert van der G. seems to have thought. He was wrong in what he did and thought, and should indeed be punished, but at least he had a reason.

Life in prison in finland equals 14 years. That's the maximum.
