it means 2 discs of 2 tb = 4 tb.

i had dedicated server it had 2x500GB

i was using only one 500 gb disc, as i never needed more space.,
but then one day i asked support about another disc and they said , its already there you just have to mount it.

Since we're on the topic, and out of curiosity...

I prefer to setup my servers with 4x HDs (RAID 10 -- striped + mirrored).

To my knowledge, I've never had a HD failure in this arrangement. But I'm curious... How would I know if a drive goes bad?

That sort of thing isn't proactively monitored by the host is it?

there are many possible uses for 2 discs - it does not have to do with RAID.

i.e. a server with 2 networkcards can also be setup as it would be 2 servers - even with different operating systems.

best use is what stefan said to use it as a mirror from disc 1 - in that case a server can be switched to the second disc in case disc1 fails.

Is it possible to use all 4 TB on the 2x2?

No. You have to remember that a portion of it is going to be used for the OS, swap and tmp files. so you'll have 1 drive with maybe 1.6 TB of space and one with 1.8TB.

Formatted space is always smaller, my 4TB drives come in with 3.8TB of space, and you really should only use around 80% to 85% of the drive, otherwise it starts to take a performance hit when writing data to the drive.

Not really a good idea anyway unless you have another option setup for backing up your server on a daily basis

                    Good luck!
