it's not that those devices aren't x-rayed now, if you x-ray them in the checked luggage it's even easier to miss something

This travel restriction makes no sense at all. We can ban electronics from certain airlines flying out of certain countries, but what is stop terrorists from shipping such bombs into the US hidden in a container of thousands of other batteries and then boarding planes in the US with them?

Is hold baggage screened for bombs to a higher level than hand baggage ?

The reality is we are wide open to terrorist attacks.
About sixty miles from me is a huge oil refinery. It's located right next to the freeway. Seems to me like anyone could just blow through the chain link fence and do whatever. Same thing with power plants which are lightly defended.
If they can get a dozen or more terrorists into the US like they did on 9/11, they could do all kinds of damage. It's not a matter of if, but instead a matter of when.
